a very old man had two daughters, a young girl married to a gardener, and a middle-aged woman married to a tile-maker.

a long while after their marriages, he went to visit the younger daughter who had married the gardener, and inquired how she was and how all things went with her. she said, "all things are prospering with me, and I have only one wish." when the man asked what her wish was, she responded, "that there may be a heavy fall of rain, so that the flowers will be well watered."

not long after, he went to the eldest daughter who had married the tile-maker, and likewise inquired of her how she fared. she replied, "I want nothing that I do not have, and have only one wish." the man asked what the wish was, she responded, "that the dry weather may continue, and the sun shine hot and bright, so that the bricks might be dried."

he said to her, "if your sister wishes for rain, and you for dry weather, with which of the two am I to join my wishes?"

in an attempt to please everybody, you may end up pleasing nobody.
