Groaning in frustration, I grabbed my phone and decided I'd rather talk to my friends from Denver than figure what I was going to do about Carter.
Megan still hadn't replied, what was up with her? Max and Chris had answered every text I sent them but Megan was either MIA or ignoring me. I tried her again just for the heck of it.
Hey, just wondering how your doing... ~Annabelle
There was of course no reply, and in all honesty it was starting to piss me off that my best friend who had fought to get me to stay in Denver was now completely ignoring me.
Rolling my eyes and feeling a pang of angry hurt, I texted Chris first and then Max.
Hi Chris, miss you. How is everything in Denver? Xoxo ~Annabelle
Hey Max, I feel like we haven't talked in forever! How's life? And do you know why Megan is ignoring me?... ~Annabelle
Sighing, I waited for someone to reply. The hallways were empty and silent, which happened to be just what I needed.
I felt my phone buzz in my pocket and I smiled as I read Chris's reply.
Hey! I've missed you, you had me worried when you disappeared after all the insanity at the hospital and driving away from those people chasing us. You ok? And Denver's good, it was better with you though. But me and Alec are talking more. ~Chris
Yeah, I'm ok I guess, that whole thing was just... Strange. And that's good, tell Alec I say hi. ~Annabelle
Ya definitely strange. And I will, but I gtg. Finals tomorrow, kill me uuuuggghhhh. ~Chris
Ok, good luck, I know you'll do great. ~Annabelle
Memories of being chased through Denver and all the drama between Chris and Alec came buzzing back. It was a memory I'd rather not focus on. But it was still nice to talk to Chris - someone who wasn't involved in everything at the academy.
Max replied, being his usual charismatic self.
Hiya! You're right it's been FOREVER! I'm good, how r u? No idea tho, I'll ask her next time we go out. ~Max
Ikr! Btw I'm good. Oh and thanks, let me know what she says. ~Annabelle
Kk cool. So what u been up to? ~Max
I started to type a response when I heard a sound. My head snapped up and I looked around feeling panic clenching my stomach. I listened closer and heard footsteps. Faint but growing slowly louder. And probably closer.
All kinds of insanity. Gtg! ~Annabelle
Haha, ok, bye. ~Max
Hastily, I replied before shoving my phone into my pocket and creeping carefully down the hall.
I realized I had nothing to defend myself with besides my body and was about to turn back when I went around the corner and slammed into someone with too perfect hair.
"Oh! Carter." I froze, feeling like I should run but being rooted to the spot. Neither of us looked comfortable.
"Hey..." He said slowly, nodding in an awkward greeting, "we need to talk. Meet at my dorm? 8 o'clock?"
