Ed’s POV

(Flashback)

“Come on Ed, mate, smile man it’s Christmas!” My friend Jo handed me a beer and shuffled off into the sea of dancers. Everyone kept saying that to me but the thing was it didn’t feel like Christmas. It wasn’t right without her. I looked around at the house party I was at. The place was trashed. Drunken adults jumped around head banging to the music. Suddenly I caught sight of a familiar face: gorgeous eyes, long auburn hair. She smiled at me and beckoned me to follow her. I felt my feet moving following the girl. I watched as she walked up the stairs and turned to check I was following her. A smile spread across her face as she saw me. I saw a glimmer in her eyes and she was just so perfect. She walked through a door and out onto a balcony. I stood in the doorway watching her, tilting my head to the side.

As I walked onto the balcony I saw that she was standing on the wall, her arms spread wide. “Annie, what are you-“ I began, but she turned and put a finger to her lips. Suddenly her foot slipped and she stuck out her hand, her eyes wide. I through my hand out and grasped the empty air.

All of a sudden the cool night air hit me and with it the mirage of Annie vanished. I slumped down on the balcony my back against the wall. Every time I closed my eyes I imagined what she looked like falling. The look of fear on her face. The pain she felt when she landed breaking her back, ribs and leg. The confusion she felt as she felt the blood loss from her cracked skull. What she must be feeling now, in a coma in a hospital. All alone.

A tear slide down my face. I felt a hand on my shoulder. I looked up and a girl stood there, short with blonde hair. “You alright there?” she said, leaning forward seductively. As she got closer I watched and for a split second her face changed. I blinked hard and saw the blondes face very close to mine, I breathed in deeply, she smelly different, not right, not like Annie. She twirled her blonde hair and said “Fancy coming inside with me” as she spoke the hair on her head seemed to darken, the blonde vanishing and the deep auburn shining. I reached out and she took my hand.

I recoiled at her touch. She felt different, not like Annie. She grabbed my hand and pulled me up. I stood there my head spinning. I stared down at the fifth beer in my hand. Or was it my sixth. The blonde girl took my hand and led me backwards, into the bedroom. As she walked I heard her say “What’s your name handsome?” as she spoke her voice changed, I heard Annie’s soothing voice, not this strangers. “Annie it’s me Ed” I said. She chuckled as she took the beer out of my hand. Her laugh was different, not like Annie’s. “One too many of these ey handsome?” she said, sitting me down on the bed next to her. I looked into her blue eyes and as she leant closer they glinted and shone a gorgeous hazel. She kissed differently too, not like Annie.
