It was the first day of the semester. I sat in my seat in the computer lab waiting for class to start. I had an hour and a half to waste so I logged on to face book and checked my emails. I was so excited to be back in school. I couldn’t stand sitting at home, so I was here early. No one else was here yet. There were a few staff members roaming the hallways. After what only seemed like minutes though it was nearly forty. I heard a commotion behind me.
I turned around to see the most beautiful woman I had ever laid eyes on. She was probably about 5’8” tall average weight yet fit looking, dark curly brown hair that hung to the middle of her back, she had greenish brown eyes and she looked terrified. I thought “Oh man if this is our teacher; she’s going to get walked all over,”
I decided to be nice. I stood and walked up to her. I held out my hand “Hi, I’m Rae Lynn, but you can call me Rae,” I said politely.
She finished sitting her stuff down and took my hand shaking it. “I’m Carlie Sowers. Nice to meet you. I’m assuming you’re in my first class?” She said in more of the form of a question.
“Actually I’m in both of your classes. You look scared,” I tell her.
“Not scared just nervous. This is my first teaching job. I don’t know if I’ll be any good at it. And I wasn’t really all that sure where I had to go. Hence why I’m here almost an hour early. ” She said with a smile.
I let out a little giggle. “This place isn’t that big,” I said with a smile.
“Yeah, I know. But I was figuring that it’d give me time to calm my nerves. I need a cigarette; you want to come outside with me while I smoke?” She asks grabbing a pack of Newport’s from her purse.
“I don’t smoke but yeah I’ll come out with you and keep you company,” I tell her and lead the way outside to the smoking area.
We sit on the benches outside and she lights her cigarette. You can see her nerves calm instantly with that first inhale of nicotine.
“Sorry. I’m normally a very confident person. But for some reason this job has be so nervous. What if no one likes me and everyone despises my classes?” She asks taking another drag on her cigarette.
“That will not happen,” I say.
“How can you be so sure,” She asks.
“I like you. What’s not to like. You seem very nice and down to earth. You are extremely attractive,” I say.
Shit did I just let that slip out?
She smiles holding her cigarette down where the smoke won’t blow in my face.
“You think I’m attractive?” She says still smiling.
Fuck I did let it slip.
“Uh…Yeah sorry. I shouldn’t have said that,” I say.
“It’s alright. I won’t hold it against you. I like you. You’re an honest person. Normally a person would never let something like that slip. Accident or not,” She says with a smile.
“I try to be honest. But sometimes my honesty gets me into trouble,” I say feeling my face go as red as the bottle of coke I am holding.
She lets out a laugh and I stare at her wondering what is so funny.
“What?” I say curiously.
“You’re so cute when you blush,” She tells me making me blush more.
She finishes her cigarette and puts it out placing the butt in the bucket beside the bench.
“Thank you Rae. You have made me feel so much better,” She tells me.
“Glad I could help,” I tell her holding the door open for her.
I go back to my seat and pull out my phone to text my best friend Angela. I tell her that our teacher is very good looking and also told me I’m cute when I blush. She sends me a text back telling me she is almost to the school and that she will be the judge of my previous judgment.
I went back to playing on the internet. Ten minutes later Angela comes in and sits down beside me greeting Carlie on her way by.
“Damn girl. You’re right. You got good tastes,” She tells me loudly.
I look over at Carlie horrified. “Angela!” I screech alarmed.
Carlie looks over at us. “Everything okay girls?” She asks.
I blush horribly and grunt that everything is fine.
She chuckles at me blushing and I burry myself back into my computer trying to ignore Angela.
“Rae,” Angela whispers.
I turn to her in aggravation. “What?” I loudly whisper.
I can see Carlie watching us trying not to laugh.
“You were totally right about her,” she whispers a little too loudly.
Carlie giggles trying very hard to suppress it so that we don’t hear it.
“Ang. You are so discreet you know that,” I say in a normal volume as I stand up and leave the room.
I go down to the water fountain and get a drink. I don’t want to go back to the class. I secretly wonder if it is too late to drop classes. I suddenly want to drop both of my classes.
I hear someone walking down the hall and I lean on the wall near the water fountain. Carlie comes around the corner looking both directions. She spots me and heads my direction.
I excaudate a huff as she comes over to me.
“Hey,” She says coolly.
“Sup,” I say trying to match her coolness. It doesn’t work.
She smiles. “Come on,” She says and I follow her back outside where we started our evening.
She lights up another cigarette then points the pack towards me.
“I don’t smoke. I already told you that,” I tell her.
“I think it’ll help calm your nerves, have one,” She says skillfully lighting her own with one hand.
I have smoked before and I sigh realizing she is probably right. I take one and puff on it while she smokes hers.
I do feel better.
After a few minutes of silence she turns to me, “Are we going to have a problem this semester?” She asks.
I chuckle. “No. Not unless Angela makes it a problem. She has a way of being very blunt and she doesn’t care who hears. If I knew she was going to make the comments she did I would have never confided in her. I’m sorry,” I say embarrassed.
“Rae, you are too cute you know that. You blush so easily. Relax. I’m not going to hold this against you. I just think it’s funny. And the way you got all defensive is so adorable. I figured I’d catch you and let you know that it’ll be our little secret,” Carlie says with a smile.
“Thanks. I feel better,” I say putting the cigarette in my hand out. Then I stand up and go over near the grass and spit a few times to get the taste of nicotine out of my mouth.
This makes Carlie bust out in a full-fledged laugh. I smile. I can’t help it. At this time people start filling in for class that is going to start in about fifteen minutes. We go back inside and I sit down next to Angela.
“You ever do that to me again and our friendship is over,” I say leaving no room for argument.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean anything,” She says clearly not understanding how much she embarrassed me.
“Just forget it. And don’t do it again,” I tell her.
We both go back to playing on the computers until class starts.
