Angela screeched into the phone when I told her that Carlie had kissed me.

“Oh my god Rae! I totally read that woman right,” Angela said triumphantly.

“Yeah. Okay. Whatever. What do I do now?” I ask pulling out of the parking lot.

“Sit back and enjoy the ride. I got to go. I have to be up in like three hours for work. I’ll see you after maybe?” She says.

“I don’t know. Maybe,” I tell her and hang up.

I drive the five minutes home and let myself into my apartment. I lay down for bed then remember that Carlie told me to text her. I grab my phone navigating to the new messages and send one to her informing her that I made the five mile drive to my house.

A few minutes after I sent it she sends me one.

Thanks for letting me know. I can’t sleep.

I read it. Oh god I’d love to invite her here. But that would be inappropriate. I send her a message back.

Yeah me neither. I really hope to see you again soon outside of school. I like you.

Moments later my phone rings.

It’s Carlie.

I answer.

“Hey,” I say into the phone.

“What are you doing?” She asks.

“Laying here in bed,” I say.

“Thinking about you,” I add.

She chuckles and the line goes silent.

I wait a few minutes. There is no noise from either of us.

“Carlie?” I ask quietly.

“Hum,” She says sounding tired.

“I was just making sure you were still there. You were quiet,” I say quietly.

“Oh I was just thinking. I’m sorry,” She says.

“Hey that’s my line,” I say with a giggle.

She laughs too. Then there’s another silence.

“So do you want to come over?” We both say at the same time.

We both giggle a little bit. “I’m sorry I shouldn’t be doing this,” She says.

“I know this, but like Angela said, just sit back and enjoy the ride,” I say with a smile.

“You told Angela?!” She asks alarmed.

“I tell Angela everything. Don’t worry she’s cool she won’t say anything to anyone,” I say.

“Okay if you say so. Are you coming here or am I coming there?” She asks bluntly.

“You know what. Why don’t you come here. I haven’t spent much time with my cats the last few days and I don’t want to leave them alone tonight. I’m on East twentieth and Jefferson. Apartment seven,” I tell her.

“Alright. I know where that is. It’s only like four blocks from my place. I’ll be there in five,” She tells me hanging up.

I get up and go out to my living room and gather up a few lost dirty articles of clothing and stuff them in the hamper in my bedroom. A few minutes later there is a knock on my door.

My heart skips a beat as I skip over to answer it. I open the door and she is turned away from me waiting for my answer. I have a moment to observe her without those piercing greenish brown eyes protruding into my soul.
