"Ginger! Hey buddy! I didn't know we had science together!" I love this kid. I really do. Ginger is just the perfect person and he loves me back. He might not always say it, but we both know it.
"Go away you delusional small girl. I'm trying to study." he mumbles back to me and lets out a long sigh.
"You wanna hear a joke?" I ask him after a second of silence. I know I'm pestering him, but I honestly think he's cool.
I'm standing next to his high counter science table with his books spread out everywhere with papers sticking out. He honestly looks like a mess.
"Will you go away after?" he snaps back.
"No."
"Then no. I don't want to hear a joke."
"Please! It's really funny!"
He sighs again and sets down his pencil. "Fine, go ahead you odd eager puppy."
I shift from foot to foot attempting to conceal my giggles. "Okay, you ready?"
"No."
"What do you call a magic owl?" I slap my hands over my face, but my laughter gets out. This joke gets me every time.
"I don't know."
"Hoo-dini! Get it?? HOO!"
"HOO gave you sugar?"
I pout. Am I acting that happy? I didn't really realize. Maybe I should tone it down. But why give Ginger the satisfaction?
"I'm allowed to be in a good mood, dear Ginger. You should get on my level." I snap back. I really want to talk to him, but he really doesn't want me here. I feel someone press their hand on my lower back and I turn to see Jonathan.
"Hey Collin," Jonathan nods to Ginger. Collin? I like Ginger better.
Collin shrinks back and starts to gather up his stuff.
"Ginger, what are you doing?" I ask. I narrow my eyes at him.
Ginger freezes and looks between me and Jonathan. He lets out a shaky laugh.
"I forgot that I have a doctors appointment and my mom is waiting for me outside." he shrugs his shoulders. "I might be back later, bye!"
Ginger leaves the classroom and I turn all my attention to a red faced Jonathan.
"That was pretty weird, huh?" I say to him. Why would Ginger leave like that?I'm sure he's lying about the doctors appointment. Is it because of Jonathan?
"Yeah pretty weird." Jonathan mumbles out.
"Did you need to talk to me about something?" I ask, shaking myself out of the last conversation with Ginger, which is still bothering me, but I know I can't interrogate him until tomorrow.
"Oh yeah," he brings his eyes back to me and I'm lost. "Do you want to hang out after school?"
Jonathan looks very shy, but very dark in a way. He seems very out of place in the classroom and not because this isn't his class right now. I see everyone's eyes on us, like hawks. Some show disgust and resentment and others show envy.
"Yeah, of course. Your house?"
"Maybe we could go out and get some food first." Wait. Like a date? Oh goodness. Okay, I need to chill.
"Yeah, sure. Sounds like a lot of fun." I say.
A smile graces his face and I almost faint. Why is he so beautiful? This is not fair at all. To my surprise, he hugs me and whispers in my ear, "You're cute when you blush."
I push him away and stomp my foot. "I'm not cute. That was a very mean thing to say to me."
His delirious laugh fills the room and more people turn to look. I wonder when the last time was that he actually laughed in school.
"You are very cute." He says with a big smile. The bell rings and he tells me bye.
I slump down in my seat and press my hands to my cheeks.
He is going to kill me.
