"Hayley!" My mother bangs on my room door. "Hayley open this door right now!"

I roll my eyes and ignore her.

"If you don't open this door right now, you can forget about New York this summer!"

Is she really playing this game right now?

She's the recent divorcee, parading around in fishnet stockings and low cut, skin tight dresses then threatens to cancel my trip to New York, because I refuse to talk her. I have every right to be mad at her. I hear heels clicking and the knocking stops, she must have walked away. Minutes later a knocking is heard, but this time its softer and more gentle. "Hayley. Can I talk to you?"

"Yeah." I call and head to the door.

"What's up?" I ask and she steps in.

"It's a boy." Jess says.

"What's a boy?" I ask, hoping she isn't talking about Kenneth's alleged son. I haven't been referring to my father as 'dad', these days, instead by his first name. Dad is a title he doesn't deserve.

"This isn't about dad." She quickly states. "It's a boy in my class."

"What happened?" I sit beside her on my bed.

"Well, he asked if we hang out sometime, and I said sure because I really liked him. Then mom said I could invite him over so I did. We were in my room talking about music and he kissed me." Her eyes dart to the ground and I immediately know that wasn't all that happened.

"What did you do?" I ask, still wanting to sleep but I know having Jessica open up might not happen again.

"I kissed him back." She says.

"And?" I press.

"We... He...um...we had sex." Her cheeks redden.

I want to yell at her. I want to tell her how stupid and careless that was. I want to scream at her until she bursts into tears, until she completely regrets having sex at such a young age but I know that won't get us anywhere, so I ask her what really matters. "Did you use protection?"

A few tears trickle down her cheek. "I'll take that as a no." I say, more than disappointed in her. More tears pour from her eyes and in seconds my lap is soaked with her tears. I run my fingers through her bleached blonde hair.

"Does mom know?"

"No." Her voice is barely audible.

"Jess, when did this happen?"

"Today."

"Where was mom?"

"She left. She said she was going on a date."

My blood boils. "She went on a date, leaving two teenagers unsupervised!"

"Hales, please don't tell her." Jessica pleas. "Please don't. Not yet."

"I wasn't going to tell her, its not my place to. I'm leaving that to you. I'll buy you morning after pills tomorrow okay?"

" Thanks. " Jessica stands up and is about to leave when I call out, "I'd like to meet this guy!"

"What? Why?"

"I'm like the only responsible person you have left, its important that I know who to call in case something happens."

"What do you mean?" She asks. "You think I'll get pregnant?"

"It's a possibility." I shrug.

"I only did it once." She says.

"And that's all it takes."

.......................

I wake up at little earlier this morning since I have to go to the drugstore before school. I wake Jess and make breakfast.

"I'm really sorry." Jessica says.

"For what?" I ask.

"Disappointing you." She hangs her head.

"It's fine. Things like this happen all the time." I say. "We should hope nothing more comes from this." I say, hinting towards teen pregnancy.

"So when did you lose yours?" She asks.

"Virginity? I haven't." I say, proudly.

"What?! But you're like seventeen!"

"That doesn't mean anything. I'm waiting for the right guy and the right time." I tell her.

"Maybe I should have done that." She mutters.

"Here." I pass her a plate of scrambled eggs, bacon and toast.

"Thanks."

Only a few people are in the pharmacy this morning and I'm glad. The last thing I'd want is to run into someone I know, while shopping for morning after pills.

"Good morning. How may I help you?" The pharmacist asks.

"Good morning, I'd like some morning after pills, please."

"What kind?" She asks.

"The best." I smile and she laughs.

"How much would you like?"

"I don't know, a dozen? "

"Coming right up." She goes to the little microphone and calls out my order. I'm a little irritated by this, but given the age of the people in here, they're probably getting batteries for their hearing aids.

"I said Plan B One Step! The morning afters!" The pharmacist shouts. Soon, two boxes of contraceptive are thrust out the transparent window.

I pay for them and the pharmacist hands them over.

"May I have a bag?" I ask.

"Sorry honey, we're all out of paper bags."

"I understand." I say.

I don't feel comfortable walking out the drugstore with these in my hands but they don't have any bags and my dress has no pocket. I hurry to get to door, but someone already opens it from outside.

The boxes drop from my hands, when my eyes meet his.

Why is he here?

He bends down and picks up Jessica's 'medication'.

"Morning after, huh?" He smirks.
