The sun hadn't risen yet, the sky a washed out dark blue, streaked with grey clouds that would turn white in the morning sun. The birds were just beginning to wake, their shrill cries and beautiful songs bouncing from tree to tree as Frisk walked at a brisk pace, hoping to reach her destination before anyone noticed her. She was the only human in this neighborhood, not to mention everyone from the underground knew her, so if someone saw her, it'd be hard to get away again. The air had a pleasant chill to it. Enough to wake up the senses, but not enough to require a jacket. As Frisk travelled the familiar path, her thoughts drifted back to her dream... Her insides churned uncomfortably and she shook her head violently. No...it was just a dream...just a dream... Then why had it felt so...real? The pain...the anger...the knife... Frisk felt tears building up in her eyes, but she took a shuddering breath to try and reign them in. She had reached the barrier. Well, where the barrier had been, before Asriel destroyed it. Now it was just a massive doorway in the side of Mt. Ebbot. Frisk quietly hoped that she didn't look as though she had had a nightmare, and stepped through the doorway. A few yards into the dark entrance, there was a bed of golden flowers. It had been there since all the monsters left the underground, and in the middle of the flower bed, a tall golden flower stood slouched over, facing away from the barrier.
"Hey, Asriel." The flower seemed to tense before turning around slowly. Flowey narrowed his eyes at the human child.
"Don't call me that." He growled. Frisk smiled and walked farther into the room.
"How has your morning been?" She wondered, sitting down cross-legged in front of the flower. Flowey grinned slightly, sadistic in his joy.
"You look terrible." He informed her.
"Mom's doing well. She misses you. I can tell. Sometimes, when she's not paying attention, she'll put out an extra plate, or almost call me Asriel. She doesn't mean to, it's just that me living with her reminds her of you. It's not often, but when it happens, her eyes will get all distant and she has to excuse herself to be alone for a while." Frisk told him. Flowey frowned for a moment, then smirked again.
"How'd you sleep Frisk? You look awfully tired. Did you have a nightmare?" He hissed. Frisk hesitated slightly, the sound of her own maniacal laugh ringing in her head. She blinked and smiled again.
"Mr. Asgore got a job at the local botany. I don't really know what it is he does, but he says that he gets to garden all day, which seems to make him happy. Don't worry, Asriel, you're still his favorite flower." Frisk laughed slightly. Flowey's eyes narrowed and he clenched his jaw.
"Quit calling me that..." He snarled. Frisk could see that they weren't having a conversation, that everything the other said was like talking to a wall. The only time she got a response out of the yellow flower was when she called him Asriel, and if she kept that up for too much longer, he might try to kill her again. Of course, he did that every time she came, but each time he'd wait a little longer before making her leave. Despite his harsh words and cruel attitude, Frisk could tell that Flowey enjoyed her company. Well, as much as you can enjoy someone's company without having a soul. Frisk laughed slightly.
"Papyrus got to ride in a police cruiser yesterday. Sans says that it was because Papyrus got in trouble for disorderly conduct, or something like that. Apparently, Sans, Undyne, and he went to some diner a few blocks away from our neighborhood that was allowing monsters in. Undyne snuck up behind Papyrus and scared him. Sans says he screamed and jumped through the window. Thankfully, no one was hurt, and the people in the diner seemed to think it was hilarious. Undyne apologized to the manager and promised to pay him back for the window, but he didn't seem to mind. A police officer happened to be driving by when it happened, so he took Papyrus for a ride and told him all about what he could do and couldn't do in public. Some people don't like living with monsters, but a lot of them have begun to accept us. I think the meetings with the governor once a month are helping. Being an ambassador can be pretty tough, though. Just the other day, I-"
"Will you shut up?!" Flowey howled. Frisk froze, unable to stop the fear from entering her heart. The flower began to laugh. First, it was quiet, then it grew louder and harsher, his face contorting sadistically, vines reaching out and wrapping around Frisk's arms, thorns cutting her skin, covering her forearms in scratches.
"Don't you get it? I don't care! I don't care about your stupid friends, I don't care how much my mom misses me, I don't care if Dad got a job, I don't care if the humans accept you! I don't care, I don't care, I DON'T CARE!" Flowey snarled, dragging Frisk forwards, despite her struggling. The sharp thorns tore at her shirt as the vines wrapped tightly around her. She gasped slightly as she tried to break free. "I don't care..." Flowey continued to hiss, his eyes filling with an insane light, a thirst for blood. Frisk let out a small cry as the thorns scratched up her arms and across her back.
"Flowey! Stop! Please! You're hurting me!" Frisk declared, unable to bring herself to hurt her brother, despite the tight vines and thorns and digging into her skin. Flowey howled in laughter.
"I don't care! Frisk, you idiot! I...I...can't care..." Suddenly, the maniacal light shattered and his face returned to normal, seeming empty. The vines slackened and fell away from Frisk, leaving hundreds of tiny cuts, some worse than others. The deepest of the cuts were on her arms, where the vines had squeezed the tightest. Blood was beginning to trickle down her arms, but she didn't care. She crawled forward on her knees to comfort the flower. Flowey hissed at her, pulling away.
"Get away from me." Frisk furrowed her eyebrows in concern.
"Asriel..." Flowey barred his teeth at her, making her fall backwards.
"Asriel isn't here, Frisk! It's just me. And if you know what's good for you, you'll just give up and leave me alone! Don't you get it? You can't save everyone, so will you please just stop trying!" Flowey's anger peaked and fell again, as if he wasn't sure how to respond to anything Frisk was doing. The human child gently wrapped her arms around the flower, careful not to crush his petals or stem as she hugged him.
"Don't worry. I'm not going to give up. I'll save you." She whispered. Flowey sighed, unable to do anything but wait for the hug to end.
"You really are an idiot, Frisk." He said, his voice void of any emotion. Frisk pulled away and smiled. She got to her feet and started to leave.
"I'll see you later, Asriel!" She called as she ran back out through the doorway. Flowey watched her until she disappeared from sight. He sighed again and turned away from the door.
"See you later, Frisk."
