Maya wore a white shirt and red beanie to school the first day. Her eyes were bluer than usual and deeper too but her mouth remained closed.
She sat in her seat, drawing as the other students entered the room.
"Hi, Maya. How was your night?" Asked Riley. Maya looked up at her, not knowing what to do.
"Maya?" She said, nervously. Maya gave a tiny fake smile and then looked back down to the drawing on the first page of the sketchbook that Riley had gotten her for christmas.
"Today, we will be continuing with the battle of Bunker hill. Riley, what date?"
"June 17th, 1775."
"Correct, Maya, who were the British soldiers under the command of?"
Maya shrugged her shoulders.
"You know the answer." Maya kept drawing. He reached down and pulled the sketchbook off of her desk and looked at it. From above, it showed a little girl in a nightgown, sitting on a bed with her knees to one side, her hands clinging to the sheets and a look of fear in the finished eye, and the outline of the other. The girls feet were also not finished but the shape was there. Her hair was dark and resting on her shoulders, a matted mess.
Cory looked back up at the girl. The girl in the drawing didn't look too much like Maya but something reminded him of her.
"Can you answer my question?" She shook her head. He placed the sketchbook down, disappointed.
"Lucas?" Lucas answered and class went on, Cory calling on Maya three times and her shrugging her shoulders each time. Finally, the bell rang. Maya got up to leave but Cory told her to sit back down. Riley stayed too.
"What happened?" He asked once all of the other students had left. Maya kept drawing. "Look at me, Maya." She looked up at him. "What happened?" Riley looked at her and then to her dad. Maya just grabbed her bag and sketchbook and left.
"We'll fix it." He said to Riley.
