Maya sat at the dinner table with the Matthews, not saying anything but just listening closely to them as they spoke. She almost made it to the end of dinner and thought, for sure, that she was not going to be asked anything when Topanga turned to her.
"You haven't spoken a word." Maya shrugged and continued to organize her food by color since she was had finished eating and she always listened better when the was occupied. She made sure that no foods touched and were each in a formation.
"Food art?" Asked Riley. Maya placed her fork down and pushed her hair out of her face.
"So you don't speak anymore?" Asked Cory. Maya looked at him in a way that told him that there was a reason but Maya was no ghost and he couldn't see through her so easily.
"Apparently not." Said Riley.
"Well, that's gonna take some getting used to." Said Cory. Everyone laughed but Maya just looked down at her fiddling hands, causing everyone to go silent.
"Well, come on, Auggie. Let's get you ready for bed." Said Topanga.
"You wanna go to my room?" Asked Riley. Maya nodded. Riley sat in her widow and Maya laid on her back on her bed, letting her legs hand off of the end, interlacing her fingers and letting them rest on her stomach.
"You know you can always talk to me. Any of us, Lucas, Farkle, my parents." Maya turned her head to look at Riley. Her gaze drifted from Riley and to a random spot on the wall until she drifted off entirely to sleep.
Meanwhile, Cory and Topanga spoke in the kitchen.
"Do you know why she's not talking?" Asked Topanga, entering. "That's not Maya."
"Tell me about it. She's kinda scaring me."
"I don't get it. She's never been shy."
"She's been drawing in my class the last two days."
"What is she drawing."
"Well yesterday, it was a scared little girl."
"Oh. What about today?"
"I'm not sure."
"Is Riley upset?"
"Riley seems fine but it's gotta be hard to not be able to talk to your best friend."
