Chapter 14: Saying Our Goodbyes

Author's note: Hello guys! The final chapter is finally here, hopefully I didn't disappoint you too much. 'Is this how it ends? Dying alone, on this cold ground. I can't believe it... How? Why did this happen to me? Never did I think I would end up like this... I knew that I would die eventually, but I didn't expect it to be this lonely. This is so unfair, it happened too fast. I spent way too much time caring about things that didn't matter. I wish I had the courage to express my feelings to Levi sooner... Maybe then we could have spent more time together.

And Petra? I can't believe she did this to me. After all the countless times I spent trying to become friends with her, after trying to comfort her, after saving her life for God's sake... Is she really that envious of me and Levi? But what does it matter now, I can't stay awake for much longer, everything is becoming more blurry and I think I'm starting to lose consciousness. I can't hold on for much longer, Levi.... I'm sorry..' You thought to yourself as your mind started slowly drifting away.

Moments later you heard the familiar sound of 3DM gear getting closer, you tried to shout but it was no use. And then you heard that voice...

"(Y/n)!!!" It was Levi. He rushed towards you and fell on his knees next to you, lifting your head up with his cold hands.

"(Y/n), can you hear me?!"

"Levi.. You're here." You gave him a faint smile and ran your fingers across his cheek.

"What the hell happened here?! The Titan got you, didn't she?"

"Yeah... I saved Petra but got hit instead.." You mumbled

"What? Petra? Where is she??" Levi asked looking around.

"She... left me. I don't know what got into her but she just... ran off leaving me here.."

"WHAT?! That piece of... (Y/n), you're bleeding everywhere, we must get you to the HQ as fa-"

"Levi please don't..." You cut him off mid sentence. "It's too late, my spine is broken and I've lost too much blood. Don't.. waste your time here, go and save whoever is still.. alive." You managed to say in between coughs.

"Shut up, don't say that! You're still alive too! I can't leave you here!"

"Levi... You're the best thing that has ever happened to me... I'm thankful I got a chance to be with you, even if it wasn't for that long.. Save humanity for me, okay? And if you can, tell Eren he really was a great friend.. Now go.." You smiled at him, cupped his cheek with your palm and felt warm liquid on your fingers. For the first time ever, you saw Levi crying.

"(Y/n) please don't make me do this, stay with me." Levi said as he ran his fingers through your hair.

"Just go you idiot.." You smiled at him and closed your eyes slowly. You brought your hand down and placed it on your thigh. Everything became silent and you lost consciousness.

"(Y/n)..." Levi whispered in between sobs. He hugged you tightly and started crying. His tears fell on your cheeks, which had now lost their pinkish tone and turned completely pale. Once he managed to calm down, he kissed your forehead and placed your now lifeless body down on the ground and stood up.

"I'll be back for you..." He whispered.

-Time Skip-

After defeating The Female Titan the only survivors of Levi's squad were him, Petra and Eren. He made sure Eren got back safely and then came back to where your body was. He sat down, carefully cut out the Survey Corps emblem from the pocket on your jacket and then wrapped your body in cloth. He then picked it up and carried it to the wagons. When he got there, he placed you in the same wagon where Eren's unconscious body was. From the corner of his eye he saw Petra. He then walked up to her, with anger and frustration overwhelming him, and pushed her.

"How could you do that to her?! She saved your goddamn life and you just left her there!" Levi shouted out loudly causing a scene. Other Cadets turned to Levi and Petra confused. Levi then grabbed Petra by her collar.

"Why did you do that? Answer me!" He said as he looked into Petra's terrified eyes. She started whimpering.

"C-corporal Levi.. w-what are you talking about?"

"Don't play dumb, you know exactly what I'm talking about! Answer me right now, why did you leave her behind?!" Levi shouted, shaking her violently. Eventually, Petra gave in and told the truth.

"I did it for us Levi! I wanted to be with you so badly but (Y/n) stole you from me! I didn't want to leave her behind but what choice did I have?!" Petra cried out as Levi let go of her collar and she fell to the ground. At this point Eren had already woken up and was confused about what was going on.

"Corporal Levi, what.. are you talking about?" He asked. Levi didn't answer, he just pointed at the body laying next to Eren. Eren moved the cloth away to reveal (Y/n)'s pale, lifeless face. He immediately gasped, raised his hand and covered his mouth with it as tears started streaming down his face. Levi turned back to Petra, who was now laying on the ground, crying.

"You have committed treason of the highest order. Such actions are punishable by death, you know that? But no, I won't kill you.. That would mean (Y/n) wasted her life for nothing! From now on you are no longer a member of my squad or The Survey Corps, you will get back to the city and live with your father. And don't ever let me see your face again, you crazy bitch." Levi said as he walked away from Petra.

"Levi please forgive me!" Petra cried out, but Levi ignored her. He walked up to Eren and looked him in the eyes.

"Are going to be okay, brat?" He asked.

"Y-Yes Sir.." Eren answered, wiping away his tears. Levi looked at your face and sighed.

"She wanted me to tell you that you were a great friend." Levi said as he brushed your (h/c) hair aside.

"T-thank you, Sir. I appreciate you telling me this..." Eren said as he laid down. Levi took his last look at your face and touched your cold cheek.

'(Y/n), you little brat... I hope you're in heaven now...' He thought as he covered your face with cloth. He then hopped on his horse and moved away. The wagons started moving soon after and in about an hour The Survey Corps reached the city. Petra was escorted to her house and her uniform was taken away as well as her 3DM gear. She begged Levi to forgive her but he didn't say a word to her. Once everyone reached the HQ, Levi took care of his horse and changed out of his blood stained clothes. Levi then went into your room and sat on the bed. He looked around and when he opened the cupboard next to your bed he saw the picture of you and your parents. He pulled out your Survey Corps emblem, picked up the photo and looked at them.

"At least you're with your family now, my dear (Y/n)... I promise to never forget you." Levi whispered to himself as he shed a single tear. He folded the picture and put it into his pocket as well as the emblem. He then walked out of the room, closing the door behind him.

Don't worry about it Levi. The life I had was short but I spent my last moments with my true love and was able to pass away at peace. That's why I will stay by your side, guarding you from any danger. I will make sure you stay out of trouble.
