In sixth year Remus fell in love with a Ravenclaw girl, she was smarter than smart, as beautiful as a model and the kindest person he had ever met.
For a time they were happy, she in return loved him. However after six months it was time for Remus to tell her about his "furry little problem" as Padfoot and Prongs called it.
He had planned his approach, lending her a copy of his "favourite book", 'the hidden life of a werewolf' by George West. It documented the life of one unnamed werewolf as he was banished from society, the fear he felt of the monster he became and his horror at the prospect of hurting others. Remus felt it would help to combat any stereotypes that had been driven into her mind from the day of her birth.
Although on the day he told her, he was screamed at, insulted, and called a monster before being slapped across the face. He was broken, sitting on that patch of grass under their tree his heart - his belief in love - broke and he promised to never give his heart to another until it stopped beating.
A twig snapped and his head shot up, standing behind a bush ten feet away were a noble stag, a scruffy dog and a tiny rat: the Marauders were there and they had seen it all. Shifting back to young men he saw the pity and brotherly love in their eyes so he ran all the way up to the dormitory knowing they wouldn't be a match for his werewolf speed.

Remus locked himself in the dormitory for a week; crying, punching the wall and making his way through the mountain of chocolate he had stored under his bed.The Marauders were worried but there wasn't much they could do except camp outside the door, talking to Remus and shrinking the food they had gotten from the kitchen to fit under the gap in the door.

Finally - after Minnie had a word with him - Remus left his dorm and returned to classes. To everyone he seemed the same but his best friends saw the difference in him.No longer would he read those romance books for teenage girls or allow the other boys to touch him. He had changed, closed himself off from the emotion of love.
However this changed on that fateful night. Remus began to notice what he had missed he was confused and felt betrayed by his closet and only friends, three were dead and one was a traitor. So he hid, closed himself off further until no one remembered him except for Minnie.
And so she convinced Dumbledore to hire him, told him he could revert back to his old self and she was right.
Over the course of the year he tried to remember the good times he had with the marauders rather than the times later in his life: snuggled with Lily Evans reading a book when he was eleven, James and Sirius vowing to help with his condition however they could when they were twelve and Peter running to honeydukes when ran out of chocolate near the full moon when he was fourteen.
By the night in the shack where all was explained he felt he was ready to welcome the brotherly affection from Sirius and maybe even the love of a certain pink haired young Hufflepuff.
