“They didn’t agree on much. In fact, they didn’t agree on anything. They fought all the time and challenged each other ever day. But despite their differences, they had one important thing in common. They were crazy about each other.”
― Nicholas Sparks, The NotebookChapter One
“Chavez, do I have to tell you again? The case is settled! Go out and have some fun!” Sergeant Walsh says encouragingly. He’s a pretty old man but he looks good for his age, he has his arms folded over his chest as he looks down at me with his grey eyes. He has dyed his hair brown but there’s silver regrowth emerging from underneath and its slicked back with every type of styling agent a man can get his hands on.
“No, sir,” I chuckle as I awkwardly hold my elbow, he’s the only person in this station I’m nervous around and the truth is, he’s probably the only one I shouldn’t be nervous around. I let my hair fall like a curtain over my face but quickly brush it back. “I’ll go get Jess and we can go out,” I suggest and Walsh nods in approval.
“Go on kiddo, go be reckless,” he teases, gesturing with his head for me to turn around and I do.
“We have some serious shopping to do!” Jess squeaks with a devious little grin on her face. She held out her arm and I took hold, chucking my files on my desk for Monday morning. Walsh is right. I need to get away for a bit.
“So what club are we going to?” I ask her and she rolls her eyes at me as she turns into our local shopping centre.
“Oh, dear Desirae, you have no idea what I have in store for you!” She teases and I look at her confused.
“Okay, and what do you have in store for me?” I chuckle and we pull into a spot, annoyingly far away from the entrance. As I get out I let out a huff but an amused smile dances across Jess’ face.
“I got us into an exclusive invite only party! Which is why we’re shopping and not scraping the bottom of our wardrobes for the dress we wore three summers ago,” she jokes and I clench my teeth, this could be ever so interesting. We literally go through every store and when we finally settle I almost feel as if it was worth it. I bought a black, off the shoulder bandage dress that was fitted and ended mid thigh. It had gold lace trailing down the sides from the wasit down in two, two inch wide strips. I matched it with some new silver strappy platform heels, a necklace with diamantes and a ring my parents bought me for my birthday.
“You look so fricken’ hot!” Jess squeals when I come out of my bathroom, “but we have got to fix that hair,” she says referring to the frizzy, un-styled blob on the top of my head. I nod in agreement, and put on my make up while she straightened my hair. I decided on a Smokey eye with a plain lip gloss of which Jess approved with a colourful scream of delight. She’s definitely the more hyperactive one of the two of us and I love her to pieces because of it. She’s wearing a navy blue, silk, strapless dress matched with nude heels and a silver clutch and she looks absolutely stunning. She’s also rocking the Smokey eye and lip gloss.
I stuff my mobile into my bra and as Jess leaves I slide my gun holder onto my leg and grab my gun. There is no way I’m going out without my baby. I lock my door behind us before we jump into the taxi. “This is going to be so fucking awesome!” Jess squeals and I chuckle and nod as we pull out of the park. “I wish I would’ve painted my nails,” she huffs, examining her unpainted nails as she bites the inside of her cheeks.
