That night I sat on my bed just listening to the crickets outside of my open window, and Uncle Hank's loud, somewhat wheezy laughter. What was he laughing at? I don't know probably making fun of spanish soap operas like we used to do when I was little. I've just been sitting up here alone for the past few hours trying to process all tht's happened this summer and what I would say to my Mom on the phone, what would I tell her? Hey Mom it's Callia! Guess what, Uncle Hank's has been awesome! Zach punched a guy in the eye, I met a girl named Rachael, I met a guy named Charlie, oh and did I mention that I kissed Zach?! Yeah that's a great conversation starter! Not... Zach has been in his room all day, I mean it's not like he could do anything other than sit all bed in day with his bruised body. The doctor came earlier and said that he fractured one of his ribs, probably because those perverts kicked him until he broke!
I probably should just lock myself in a room until I have everything figured out! Wait, then I would probably die in that room, never mind! My green eyes averted to the wireless phone sitting across from me on my bed, the one I've been considering picking up. My hand reached over and held the phone in both of my hands. I began dialing my mom's number: the one she made me memorize for emergencies, or if I ever needed her. I placed the speaker to my ear and heard the faint ringing.
I heard that familiar, warm, welcoming voice at the other end,"Hello?"
I took a deep breath,"Hey...Mom it's Callia."
I could just feel her energy through the phone,"Oh sweetheart! I've missed you so much! How's your little vacation been?"
Only if she knew,"Uh, it's been good, kind of crazy actually!" I chuckled under my breath at the last part.
"Well what kind of crazy? Don't tell me your Uncle's been getting drunk on that sweet tea again! I swear, ever since that old fart quit his drinking, all he could do was get addicted to sweet tea!"
Oh Mom, you always know how to make me smile! "No, he hasn't, I guess people here are just, well like me. No impulse control."
"Sweetheart, you know that patience is a virtue, and it's going to take some time for you to acquire." Her voice was so gentle and wise, but sometimes I really didn't want to get her lectures of wisdom.
"Yeah, yeah i know.." my voice came out exasperated.
