Chapter 6- Hogwarts Express

Once home, Gran explained the basic rules of the Wizarding World. For instance, until we are in our first year, we can use magic outside of school. But as soon as we start our first year, we cannot do magic outside of school- unless in a life-threatening situation- until the end of seventh year or once we turn 17. So, when I got up to my room, I made a wall chart, counting down the days until Hogwarts, until I am not allowed to do magic outside of school. I spent most of my evenings reading The Standard Book of Spells, and then the mornings after trying to learn the spells. So far I have only mastered one, which is Wingardium Leviosa. That was the first spell in the book. First I read, then re-read the theory until I knew it off by heart, then practised the actual spell with my wand.

*Flashback

I picked up my Standard Book of Spells and flicked it open to the first spell page. Slowly I walked to my bed, put the book on my pillow, laid on my stomach and read the opening paragraph:

'Magic is a intricate learning process. It is important that you know the spell before attempting it, as a speech mistake could be more dangerous than you realise. Read the theory and make sure you know it before saying the incantation aloud.

Chapter 1:Wingardium Leviosa

This is one of the easiest spells to master in the wizarding world. This is the spell that makes items levitate off of the ground, and once more advanced, you can direct your items to certain places, thus moving items out of your way ect.

The wand movement for this particular spell is very important. Before attempting the incantation, make sure you can confidently move your wand in a swish and flick motion. Say the words, swish and flick, whilst practising to help you remember. Once this has been mastered, put your wand aside, out of the way whilst you practice the incantation. All you need to do is say Wingardium Leviosa, in a clear tone. Once you can, pick up your wand again, and whilst doing the swish and flick motion, say the incantation aloud. It may take a few attempts to master it, but once you have it will be worth your while. It is also recommended that you start with lighter objects first. Ie: A feather.'

Before bed, I had read this many times so I had it memorised off by heart. Then rolling over, I fell into an easy sleep.

By morning, I was itching to try out this spell. After waking up properly, I rolled out of bed and grabbed my wand off my bedside table. “Swish and flick.” I said to myself as I swished and flicked my wand. “Swish and flick. Swish and flick. Swish and flick.” Now I was confident with my swishing and flicking. So, as the book told me, I put my wand down, sat on the edge of my bed, and said, “Wingardium Leviosa!” Seeing as I thought I had said it confidently, I grabbed my wand again. I picked up a pencil off of my writing desk and put it down on the floor. I kneeled next to it, pointed my wand at it and whilst swishing and flicking my wand, I said, “Wingardium Leviosa.” But nothing happened. Not that I expected it to. However I kept on trying, until I managed to levitate the pencil off my rug, where it hovered for a second then crashed back to the floor. I burst out laughing. This was the first piece of magic I did. I decided to go and show Gran. Picking myself up off of the floor, I ran downstairs, towards the kitchen. “Gran!” I called, hoping she was there.

“Yes Neville?” She replied, “What have you done?” Her voice came from the kitchen. I burst through the doors, where Gran was sitting, with a cup of coffee in her hands, dressed in her night gown.
