There's a burn I'm pretty proud of towards the end of the chapter. As of today, you only see Adrien as a cool friend. For now.
I walked up to my new school's doors. Yeah, I'm a professional racer. But this kid Adrien Agreste I've heard about, he's a big shot too.
Big shots should stick together.
I thought I saw him across the yard, with this other guy in headphones. I walked up to him, and casually introduced myself.
"Hey! I'm (y/n). I'm new here."
"Hey (y/n). I'm Adrien."
"Yeah, I know. You're kind of famous around here, right?"
He laughed.
"Yeah, I guess. Here, let me see your schedule. Who knows? Maybe we have some classes."I handed him my schedule, and he smiled really big.
"We have all our classes together."
"Awesome! Mind showing me around, then?" I was slightly relieved to hear my first friend would be able to help me out. Hey, it's a pretty big campus.
"Yeah! No problem."
The bell rang, his friend Nino waved goodbye, and Adrien picked up his book. As he did, I noticed a ring on his finger. A pang of jealously shot through me, although I had no idea why.I decided to point it out anyways.
"Is that a promise ring?"
"A what?"
"A promise ring. You give it to someone you intend to keep your secrets with, someone you like."
"No, it's not then. It's just a regular ring, a boring old ring..."
"I think it's nice."
"Oh. Thanks."
We sat next to each other in most classes, since Nino wasn't there.
Physical Education was the bomb. I sprinted faster than Adrien, eventually beating the entire class. It was only a mile. I didn't understand why they were so out of breath.
"I. Thought. You. Were. A. Racer."
Adrien panted, out of breath."I am. And let me ask you, how many times do you think I had to get out of my go-kart and push it to the pit stop?" I said sassily laughing.
"Makes sense." That killer smile.
By the time we got to design class, we got separated. Nino cleared his throat, and I nodded, understanding. I caught Adrien's apologetic look, but I mouthed 'It's fine.' and took a seat in the back. Alone. Which is fine by me.
We started sketching, and the teacher asked if I wanted to move to the front, to pull up a chair.
I refused, politely.
Instead, Adrien got up and pulled me to the front. I met two other girls, Alya and Marionette. They seemed pretty cool. I started sketching again, and Adrien leaned his head over.
"What are you drawing?"
"Character design."
I showed him my sketches of my new character. I explained I was working on a story, maybe about racing. He thought it was cool, and showed his other friends. The teacher walked over and asked me to elaborate. She presented it to the class. Which was fine by me. More publicity, maybe it'll actually be up to market.
And then this blonde monster Chloe decided that enough was enough and stomped over to Adrien.
"Aw, c'mon! Adrien, don't you love me? More than... that thing?"
Heck no. I wasn't a thing.
"Excuse me, look who's talking!"
I pretended to look over her.
"Fake nails, fake lashes, fake personality...you sure you weren't made in China?"The class erupted into "OOOHHH's!"
I leaned back in my chair, satisfied.
"You shouldn't have done that."
"Aw, c'mon! Adrien, wasn't she bothering you? Wasn't that coming to her? Didn't she deserve to be burned? Just this once?"
"That's the problem. It's not going to be just this once, with Chloe."
Adrien is right, of course. I've also accidentally slipped a pun in there. "Doesn't she deserve to be burned just this once?" Burned, because you're Fox Flame. 🔥😂
