Shocked

ACT I

I had always hid from the painful criticisms of the public surrounding me. Living a life of glitz and glamour isn’t all that graciously pleasant. Often times I found myself sitting alone in a far corner of my room thinking what it would feel like to be born not an heiress. What if one morning I would wake up living a plain life? Normal. All I want is a normal life away from the public’s watchful eyes.

“Young lady?” I looked up and met Jackson’s weary eyes. He had been trying to distract me for almost an hour since he entered my suit but my mind keeps on wandering somewhere else.

“Did you say something, Jackson?” He sighed. Whatever he had been saying over the past hour was completely gone to waste.

“I will leave you with this planner and papers to be signed instead, Young Lady. The master wouldn’t be glad to find you in this state.”

I flashed him my all-knowing-sweet-smile. Of course, my father wouldn’t be happy if he found out his darling daughter is slacking on her job. “Thank you, Jackson. You may leave,” he reluctantly bowed before leaving me alone in silence inside my huge all-black-painted office.

Let me introduce myself: I am Sydney Shelton, the daughter of the most well known business tycoon to ever been recorded in the Philippine History, Markus Shelton. To think Markus isn’t even born a Filipino. When he married Sandra Bautista-Shelton, my mother, he gave up his luxurious life in L.A. to start anew in his wife’s mother land. Soon enough the name Markus Shelton worked its way up to the top. From being featured in business articles, to being a full blown cover of well known magazines. He worked hard for it, thus he gained it.

Being his only child and heiress at the moment is a royal pain in the ass. I need to live up not just to the expectations of my father but as well as to the elite whom he had working relationships with.

I sighed. I looked up at the planner Jackson had prepared for me. I let out a hideous scream when I read the last two lines at the end of the list of schedules I had for the day.

@ 8:00pm: Meeting with your fiancé at Elise

Jackson came rushing back inside the office with a worried expression, obviously startled at my scream. I hardly scream. I am always composed and confident. That’s why Jackson sighs in relief when he saw I am in not in any form of danger as he expected he would find me in.

“What is wrong… what made you lose your composure, Young Lady?”

I looked at the planner again, disgustingly. “Who is this fiancé I am meeting?”

“He is a well known Filipino chef, Young Lady.”

“Name?” I raised an eyebrow. Anger is building inside of me. If this is some kind of sick joke, well, it’s not funny.

“Gilbert Castillo, young Lady.” I gingerly typed this name at google’s search box. Soon enough, list of articles about the man appeared on screen.

Indeed he’s a well-known cook… rich and charming. But it does not mean that I’ll marry a total stranger for that. Not at this life and not at another life.
