The next day, I knew I had to go back home. I couldn't run away from this forever.
"Here's my number, in case you need somebody to talk to." Luke handed me a small peace of paper with some numbers scribbled on it. I nodded and let the paper disappear in the pocket of my jacket.
"Thanks for everything."
Luke nodded. "Good Luck."
I left his appartment, stepping out into the cold air. I walked slowly through the narrow streets, apprehending the moment I would have to face my parents. How would I explain this to them? How would they react?
About half an hour later, I rounded the corner to my street. I stopped in front of my door, taking in a deep breath and exhaling slowly.
As soon as I had knocked, I heard steps rushing to the door. I heard the sound of keys rustling and soon enough, my mum's head popped through the door. She looked angry, but as soon as she saw me, her face softened.
"April! Jesus Christ, I was so scared." She engulfed me in a big embrace, continuing to ramble in my hair. "Never, ever do this to me again."
My Dad appeared in the doorframe, looking relieved. "I'm so glad you're fine. I mean... well, you know what I meant."
I was pulled inside and sat down at the kitchen table. I hadn't even said a word yet and mum was already talking again.
"How could you do this to us? We know it's hard to hear this kind of news, but believe me it wasn't easy fo us either. And you didn't make it any better by disappearing. I was so worried. I'm your mum. I have the right to know what's going on."
Her expression changed from worried to angry and back to worried in seconds. "I'm sorry April, I shouldn't be screaming at you. I was just so scared."
I rubbed my face in my hands before looking back up at her. "I'm sorry."
My dad's eyes softened as well. "It's okay."
"Now, young lady, you still have some explanations to do. Where the hell were you? Emely called about 20 times asking where you were."
I took a deap breath. "I was... at a friend's house. He's called Luke. He lives only a few blocks from here."
"How come I have never heard about him before?" My mum's doubtful voice questioned.
"I...uhm... I know him from school... I was at his house a few days ago for a project. When I left the hospital, it was the best place I could think of." I stuttered, hiding my shaking hands under the table.
My parents stayed silent for a few moments, seeming half convinced of my lie.
Finally, dad spoke up again. "We know how much you hate it, but we have to go back to the hospital. The sooner the better."
I nodded slowly, keeping my eyes on the table.
"We're going tomorrow." I shuddered at the thought. "You better call your friend Em back now."
Tankful for the exit, I grabbed my phone and disappeared upstairs into my room. I dialed Em's number, and she answered after the first ring. "April! Finally! Where the hell are you?"
"I'm back home now." She didn't hesitate. "Alright, be there in ten." And she hung up.
True to her word, I heard the doorbell ring ten minutes later and quiet voices speaking downstairs. Footsteps were heard shuffling up the steps, and a ginger head appeared in the doorframe. Em rushed towards me, wrapping her two small arms around me.
We stayed silent for a few minutes.
"Your parents told me." She stated. "It sucks."
"Yeah." I whispered.
When she looked back up at me, I could see tears forming in her emerald green eyes. "Don't worry, April. We're gonna get through this." She whispered. "This is just a small rock on your path. You're gonna kick it out of the way soon enough."

The next morning, we headed back to the hospital. The air was thick in the car and the silence deafening.
I could feel my lungs getting tighter as we stepped through the glass doors.
Breathe in. Breathe out.
We were greeted almost immediately by Dr. Denver. I avoided his gaze as we followed him through the endless hospital corridors.
We sat down in his office as he cleared his throat.
"We're here to discuss how things are going to happen from now on." I was thankful that he didn't bring up the part where I left the hospital without a word only a few days ago.
"You're gonna have to stay here for some time in order to get you back on your feet, running away won't help." Alright, I take back what I just thought.
I just stared at him and didn't answer. "We're gonna start with some chemo sessions in order to shrink the tumor before removing it by surgery." I froze at his statement.
He seemed to notice. "Don't worry, if everything goes right, amputation won't be necessary." He paused. "But we can never exclude that possibility."
Mom cleared her throat. "When are we gonna start the chemo?" Dr Denver looked at her for a second before returning his attention back to me.
"The sooner we start, the better it is. We will start next week, the treatment will last 2 hours and you will have to stay at the hospital for about 3 days. There will be a new chemo session every week, for as long as necessary."
A few other details were discussed before we could finally leave the hospital.
I was to stay at home until my first chemo session and use my knee as little as possible.
That was not gonna be easy.
