Luke's POV

When my phone's ringtone woke me up early in the morning, I felt that something had went terribly wrong.

My heart missed a beat as I read the caller ID flashing on the small screen. April's mom was calling me.

She had sent me home last night, saying that I couldn't spend my whole life at the hospital. I had argued, but finally agreed, as I thought it might be her way of telling me that she needed some alone time with her daughter.

I answered with shaky hands, "Hello?"

"Luke. I- something went wrong," her voice was shaky and she seemed distressed as she almost cried into the phone. "I don't know what's happening, I thought I should call you- I," I cut her off in her rant. "Hey, hey, calm down. Take a deep breath, tell me what happened," I tried to reason, even though my heart was beating a hundred miles an hour and I was freaking out internally.

She took a deep breath before going on, "I don't know what it is. She was sleeping when her heart monitor started beeping like crazy. She flatlined, Luke. They are trying to get her back. There are doctors everywhere, I don't know what to do," she cries.

My heart sank into my feet. She flatlined. God, let her live.

I had already pulled on my shoes and a shirt over my sweatpants while April's mom was talking, so I told her I would be there in 10 minutes. I hung up, grabbed my keys and slammed the door behind me.

As I drove to the hospital, a thousand thoughts were crossing my mind. What if this was it? The end? What if, by the time I arrived, she would be gone? I couldn't bear that thought, and so I pushed the gas pedal down harder and squinted my eyes as I sped through the darkness of the early morning.

Next thing I knew, I was running up the stairs to the oncology sector. My mind seemed blank as I couldn't even remember where I had left my car. All that mattered now, was her.

When I arrived at the top of the stairs, I almost ran into Em, who looked as bad as I must have been looking. Her hair was messy, her clothes seemed to have been thrown together randomly and you could easily read the panic in her eyes.

A look to the left made my panic rise. Lots of docs and nurses were running around outside of her room. I made my way past them until a firm hand grabbed my arm and stopped me. I didn't even look back to see who it was. The scene unfolding itself in front of me was horrifying. Everything suddenly seemed to be a blur, as I could faintly hear people shouting. April's body shook under the electricity.

1 time.

2 times.

I could feel myself screaming, but couldn't hear it.

I was pulled away easily from the scene, as my body couldn't seem to find the energy to resist.

It was only when I turned around and looked into the eyes of the person holding me back that I snapped out of it. It was my dad.

"Let me go!" I screamed, "I have to go! I need to get to her!"

Tears started running down my cheeks as I was frantically pulling on his arm holding me firmly in place.
