A chilly wind brushed past me, the sun already starting to set over the horizon. "Shit," I muttered under my breath. I didn't expect to be out this late. Oh well, my apartment wasn't that far of a walk, considering I walk to stores constantly despite having a car. Everytime I passed a dark alleyway, I slightly cringed, the slightest sound of a human being was enough to make me want to run down the street but I took a couple of deep breaths. Even simple leaves blowing across concrete made me look up. The longer I walked, the more skittish I became. I was too busy looking from side to side and behind me to focus in front of me, bumping into a solid object.
"Hey-!" A voice grunted, sounding deep and hoarse.
I dared to take a look, squinting in the dark. All I could see was the contour shape of a man. "Uh... sorry?" Was all I could say.
"Watch your step, woman," the man warned harshly. My eyes had adjusted enough to see dark ebony eyes glaring at me and sleek black, spiky hair that stood up. He turned around with a slight "hmph".
I started to walk past him, eager to get away and hope he wouldn't follow me. Who just stands around on a dark street with no one around? I wondered.
"Clumsy humans..." The man muttered, making me stop in my tracks.
"Hey, it doesn't hurt to be on your guard in this kind of neighborhood!" I snapped. I was always a clumsy girl, and hated it whenever someone called it out.
"On your guard, hm?" There was no mistaking the snide, sardonic tone of his rough voice. "How can you humans be on your guard and still bump into someone in the middle of a sidewalk?"
I clinched my fist. "Aren't you a human too?"
The man began to laugh slightly, a sinister kind of laugh. "You think I'm a pathetic human? I'm a Saiyan Prince!"
I rolled my eyes. "You look human enough." All I could do was glare at this man. "Anyway, I need to get home, your Majesty."
Now the man took a step forward, towards me. Every aspect of his muscular body breathed bitter annoyance. He stopped a few feet away from me.
"Don't be so rude," he growled, his tone frightening soft, as if he trying not to draw attention.
"Rude?" I stared at this man in shock, trying my best to hold my ground and surpress my instinct to back away. "You have the audacity to call me rude? For Christ's sake, I'm trying to get home without being kidnapped or killed!"
I felt certain that his eyes softened, but in the dark it was hard to tell. "Fine... sorry," he muttered bitterly.
"You don't have to apologize," I mumbled. "But you can at least walk me close enough to my apartment complex."
"A Sayian Prince would never-" He began to speak, but he stopped midsentence. "Ugh... fine. But just for a couple of blocks."
He walked behind me, keeping a slight distance but copied my pace.
"So what is a young girl like you doing out so late?" He asked.
"Er... I lost track of time," I replied. "Why were you standing in the middle of a sidewalk doing nothing?"
He seemed slightly irritated, as if I offended him, but he answered, "I was waiting for some stupid idiot."
I quirked an eyebrow but did not press him. As we neared my apartment complex, I stopped. "You can go now," I told him. "By the way, what's your name?"
"Vegeta," the man grunted. "Yours?"
"Y/n," I replied. Now in better lighting, I could see he was wearing some strange armor, muscles rippling over the spandex. I must have gawked at them for longer than necessary, because Vegeta gave me a funny look.
"Well, aren't you going to go on home?" He asked. "Or are you too scared and need me to take you all the way there?"
"N-no, I'm fine," I said, turning around to walk towards the apartments. "If I see you around, I'll say hi."
Vegeta said nothing and just continued walking until he was out of sight, without a sound and like he disappeared without a trace. I just shrugged and went on my merry way, hoping I would come across him again. And I had a feeling I would.
