"Gowasu, what is the meaning of this!" Zamasu growled, glaring at his mentor with a look of irritation. Ever since he mentioned his plans for mortals and humanity to the older shinjin, Zamasu suspected he was trying to prove him wrong. However, he didn't expect Gowasu to drag a mortal child to their tranquil home.

Gowasu waved his hand in a calm manner, while the said child pathetically cowered behind him. Zamasu didn't miss the fear in its e/c eyes.

"Zamasu, this will be the next step of your training," Gowasu continued, ignoring his apprentice's hostility. "You must learn to care for the mortals we watch over. Since I cannot teach you through words, perhaps experience will." A smile came upon his face, wrinkled with age.

"Hold on, you don't really expect me to actually look after this thing all on my own, do you?" A cold look passed Zamasu's gray-colored eyes.

Gowasu nodded slowly. "How else will you learn how to watch over them?" He moved away from the child, who was still trying to shelter behind him.

"Forget it," the pale green-skinned shinjin seethed. He glared at the child with a menacing stare, making it flinch.

Gowasu didn't reply to him. Instead, he knelted by the small mortal and talked to it in a soft, gentle tone. "What's your name?" He asked.

"Y-yn," the child stammered nervously.

Zamasu scowled. He had to admit, the child's name seemed to suit it and he sort of liked it. Just the name. Not that repulsive creature, he thought with a shudder.

"Would you like some tea, Y/n?" Gowasu continued, giving the child a small pat on the head, on his/her seemingly-soft h/c hair.

He/she gave a small nod. "Yes please," Y/n said politely in a sweet voice that made Zamasu stand there with shock. So far, this child had more respect than he thought, but he assumed it was only out of fear.

"Zamasu!" Gowasu's voice cut the apprentice from his thoughts. "Brew the two of us some tea, will you?"

Zamasu took longer than necessary to respond. "Of course," he conceded, stalking off to retrieve his cart.

He stopped, his elf-like ears picking up the sound of small footsteps behind him. It was Y/n, shyly following.

"I-I can help if you want me too," he/she murmured, staring up at him with doe e/c eyes.

Zamasu scowled. "I don't need help," he hissed.

He felt a stab of regret and remorse when the child lowered his/her head, crestfallen and forlorn. "Oh... ok. Sorry to bother," Y/n mumbled, his/her voice a little above a whisper.

Zamasu wanted to say something but couldn't find the words as Y/n headed back over to where his mentor sat. With a shrug of his shoulders, the apprentice Kaioshin went back to his duties, trying to pretend nothing had ever happened.

As weeks turned into months, Zamasu was left alone to tend to the child's needs. Often the child was reluctant to approach the green-skinned shinjin  and tried to do things first on his/her own. Then when Y/n couldn't figure it out, he/she went straight to Gowasu, if he wasn't napping or purposely avoiding him/her.

Zamasu, deep down, wished the child trusted him. He wasn't sure if it was only because he grew attached or his faith in humanity was regrowing.

"Ow!"

Zamasu's head whipped up to see Y/n on his/her stomach. He/she drew himself/herself into a sitting position and rubbed their knee. Zamasu peered closer, and realized the Y/n had tripped and hurt himself/herself. The shinjin frowned in concern and knelted down to the child's eye level.

"Are you ok?" He asked, trying to match the gentle tone Gowasu used.

The child fearfully nodded. "Er... yes... I'm ok I promise!" He/she squeaked. Y/n tried to stand up, but must've done it too quickly, for he/she jolted forward in an awkward fall.

Zamasu was quick to react, grabbing the mortal child before he/she hit the ground. "Don't try to move," he said. "Wait here, I'll go get some medicine."

He set Y/n down, and he was half-surprised to see him/her nod and remained seated on the grass. Even as he began to walk away to house, the child stayed there.

Zamasu soon returned with a small bottle and a rag, dampening the rag with the medicine. He approached Y/n and set the bottle down, and the child's e/c eyes lit up with curiosity.

"It'll sting, but just for a second," Zamasu reassured, gently pressing the rag to the scrape on Y/n's knee.

The child noticeably winced and let out a soft whimper, and Zamasu patted the child's hair, which was soft to the touch.

Y/n watched the scrape disappear and fade away, a delighted smile on his/her features. "W-wow! Thanks Zamasu!" He/she squealed.

Zamasu stood up, unable to hide a small genuine smile on his pale green face. "Anytime, Y/n. Feel free to come to me if you need anything."

Before he could walk away, he felt something wrap around one leg. Looking down, he saw Y/n hugging his leg.

"Zamasu, you're my hero."
