Chapter One

I could see the hooded figure moving closer towards me as I walked down the alleyway towards the main road. I nervously glanced back continuously as I walked as fast as I could. Nearly there, I thought to myself. I just had to make it to the main road where people would be walking around. Was that...? Wait...really? Why was there an idiot standing in the middle of the road when a car was coming? I could see the guy walking slowly into the road as the car advanced. What the hell!?

"OI! MOVE!" I yelled as I shoved him into the gravel path on the opposite side of the road, swiftly missing the car. He tumbled onto the ground with me skidding onto the patch of gravel beside him.

"Ow..Ow..Ow..." I said, wincing in pain, my knee and palms completely grazed. The little stones piercing into my flesh stung like crazy and I quickly got up.

The guy got up, brushing the gravel off his black coat, looking at me as though were the crazy one. I could see parts of his pants were ripped with tiny holes in them and his hands were also partially grazed, but what would have happened if I hadn't been there?

He opened his mouth about to say something. 'That's right.' I thought to myself. He should be thankful.

"What the hell are you doing? Are you a bulldozer or something?" he asked, looking down on me.

Eh!? Bulldozer!? That's not exactly a shining way of saying 'thank you' to the person who saved you. "You're the idiot running into the middle of the road!" I exclaimed, throwing my arms into the air.

"Obviously, I was going to wait for the car to pass before completely crossing!"

Oh, I thought to myself, right...Maybe I was getting a little too paranoid.

"Sir, are you okay?" three men in suits said as they jogged over.

"What took you so long!?" he snapped.

"Sorry, sir,"

"Who is this girl anyway? Ramming into people?"

"Miss, could you please come with us?" they asked, turning to look at me.

"Why?" I asked weakly.

"We're going to have to sort out legal issues,"

"But, I wasn't trying to harm him,"

"Well, please, just follow us." they said, opening the door to the black car.

"No," I replied, remaining firm on my feet, ready to bolt, with my arms in a strange position which I called my 'defensive' position.

"We are in no way trying to harm you," they added.

"Why should I believe you?" I asked, my eyes scanning up and down for any suspicious signs.

"Well, if we tried to kidnap you, there are crowds of people surrounding who'd be able to be witnesses if a crime were to occur. Also, how are you going to get home like that?"

"Right...okay," I replied, convinced.

I lowered my arms and got into the car, sitting awkwardly on the edge of the seats, edging as far away from the guys next to me as possible.I sat there uncomfortably, looking around as the car drove past the surrounding traffic. We finally arrived at what was the biggest house I'd ever seen. My eyes widened as I was escorted into the house.

"Arggh," I said quietly, wincing in pain as I walked. My knee was stinging as the blood dripped down my leg. The three men glanced back at me and I quickly stood upright again, pretending nothing was wrong.

"Please go in here and get cleaned up, some assistants will help you get changed into other clothes," they said, opening a door to a large room.

"But, why? I can just wear this," I said uncomfortably with a forced smile.

"Your knee doesn't look too good and your clothes are torn too," the guy from earlier replied, staring at my knees. "Plus, it's the least I can do for someone who 'saved' me," he said with slight laughter, putting the word 'saved' into quotation marks made by  his fingers.

How sarcastic, I thought to myself in annoyance.I followed into the room where three ladies dressed as maids stood beside a table looking at me.

"Hello, we're beauticians," they introduced.

"Hello?" I replied weakly.

"Let's get you cleaned up," they said, approaching me.

I sat there silently for about half an hour as they buzzed around, tidying up my wound and fixing my hair.

"Now, the clothes..." one said, looking through a large wardrobe.

"No, I'll just wear this," I said, edging away.

"Of course not," another replied, pushing me back to the wardrobe.

She pulled out a few, putting them in front of me, raising her eyebrow a few times before coming to a decision.

"Wear this," she said passing it to me, "You can change in there," she added, showing me to the bathroom.

Wow, it was really big, the bathroom was all shiny and polished. I quickly changed into the floral dress that dropped to my knees and looked into the mirror. I can't wear this, I thought to myself.

"Are you done?" they asked.

"Uh..Uh..Yes." I replied as I walked out.

"OH! That's nice!" one complimented.

"Now, we'll just take you out to the loungeroom where he's waiting," she said, leading me out.

She led me into the room before promptly leaving. I stood there, twitching strangely, feeling rather awkward. The first time wearing a strapless dress, boy was it awkward.

The guy turned around and got out of the chair before walking towards me. I stood there speechless, my legs freezing on the spot.

"I just realised, you are quite short, aren't you?" he asked.

"Eh?" I asked. I'd been in the room for about a minute, the first thing he notices is how long the dress is on me!?

"Anyway, what do you intend to do about this?" he asked, showing me his palms and a small scratch on the side of his face.

"I'm sorry, I really am. I can't compensate you. Sorry. I'm kind of stuck for money. If you wait, I can pay you,"

He chuckled to himself. What was so amusing?

"That's not what I meant." he laughed. "Who exactly are you, anyway?"

"Well, uh, I'm Cathy..."

"Well, Cathy, I'm legally obliged to take you home, since you apparently saved me today. My parents believe it necessary for me to be polite. Although I really do think it is stupid," he replied as he walked out of the room. "Are you just going to stand there?" he asked, looking back at me.
