Chapter Seven
"What are they like?" I asked, looking out the window.
Stephen slightly turned his head to look at me, a puzzled expression plastered on his face.
"As in the function. What kind of people?" I asked.
"Investors, company owners, Paul's parents, Tinh's parents, people like that," he replied as he took a turn into the road leading to the block of apartments.
Thoughts of those kind of people filled my mind and I gulped. It felt like a boulder getting caught in my throat. What would happen if I messed up or I didn't meet their expectations?
"Thanks for the lift." I said as I got out of the car and shut the door.
The window winded down and Stephen said, "Watch out, don't get hit by rocks."
"Yeah, okay!" I laughed, waving as he pulled out.
The smile was still plastered on my face as I clambered up the set of stairs and reached my apartment, jingling my keys as I opened the door. I flicked the light on and took my shoes off. In front of the mail slot of the door was quite an impressive pile of mail. One particular envelope caught my eye, it was ripped and tattered. I picked up all the envelopes and put them on the kitchen table as I opened the tattered envelope.
It read:
"Come to the alley behind then run-down Feng Shops or Derek dies. Come by yourself." the note read.
I crumpled the note up and threw it in the bin. I began to cry. What had I done to deserve this? Why was he always causing so much trouble? Why did my family have to become tangled with his? I mopped up the tears and grabbed my mobile. I pulled my coat off the rack and put it on. I grabbed a scarf and headed outside quickly.
I limped my way to the Feng Shops and looked around. It was quiet. Too quiet. I cautiously walked when I turned corners and I had goosebumps all up and down my arms and legs. I should have taken someone. But then again, why would I drag an innocent person into this mess?
"Over here." came the voice.
I quickly followed the sound into a small run down factory warehouse and walked inside, each footstep echoing.
"Stop." this time, the voice was much closer and I stopped walking.
My heart was racing as beads of sweat rolled down my forehead. What would happen now? I didn't know who these people were, it was a female voice. Derek walked forward with about two girls beside him. They didn't look like the type you'd mess with.
"I've heard there's a function tomorrow and you take your partner." Derek said, with a look in his eye that looked as though he would kill me.
"What about it?" I asked, trying to stop my voice from shaking so much.
"You'll take me I assume?" he asked.
"No. Never." I said with a look of disgust.
"Do you know who you're dealing with?" a girl said, stepping forward, spitting on the ground, the sound echoing throughout the cold and empty warehouse.
"Did you get cheerleaders too? What did you do? Use mummy and daddy's allowance to pay them!?" I yelled, taking a step backwards.
"How...dare..you.." he said, coming towards me. "Do you know how much you and your family owe me?"
"Its not a never ending sum of money. You couldn't even pay off your own debts, don't act so high and mighty."
"Feeling powerful eh? With all the rich boys by your side? Trust me, they'll drop you like a hot potato once they get bored, you're lucky I'm still here with you."
"No one could be worse than you, faking a letter saying you were in trouble so you could get me out here and get your precious cheerleaders to beat me up?"
"Don't think you're some hot model now that you're with the rich ones, you're exactly like their personal mascot, once they're done playing, you're over." he grinned.
They were advancing slowly and I could feel the pressure getting to me. I had to get out of here, and fast. Could I run? How on earth would I out run them with a sprained ankle? I was dead. Totally, completely and utterly screwed.
"You regret it now? Want to apologise? I'll make one special exception, take me home...with you." he said.
What a pedo. Creeper. I crossed my arms over my chest as I walked away slowly backwards. What would I do now? I needed a miracle to happen.
I could hear something, really, really small, a small faint wailing in the distance. Was it a police siren?
"They're coming for you. I called them, you're really dead now!" I yelled.
Hopefully, they'd fall for it and actually think I called the cops.
"You called the cops!? CRAZY SNITCH !" he yelled, looking around, panicking.
"I thought you were going to be in trouble," I said sarcastically.
The girls were the first to scram and they bolted off leaving him there. I started to sprint, as fast as I could. The pain in my ankle was stabbing me and I felt as though I were going to break it off very soon. I was out of breath. I looked back and there he was, right behind me.
Within seconds, I was on the floor and he was on top of me, my bones crushing from his weight.
"Get off me!" I yelled.
"You can...never....get away from me." he said, with breaths in between.
I managed to push him off and I took off both my shoes, taking one quickly to swing it at his eye. He yelled in pain as he covered it up and rolled onto his side. I scrambled up and quickly ran. The socks on my feet were the only things stopping the rocks from puncturing my flesh.
Viv's house was nearby and I'd never be able to make it back to my house without getting caught. I quickly took a turn and knocked on the door of Viv's house.
"Open the door!" I yelled, puffing, looking over behind my shoulder to see if he was there.
I heard the key open the lock and I thrusted myself int the house as the door opened. I crashed onto the ground, thanking God I was alive.
