Chapter Four

I headed up the staircase and unlocked the door to my apartment. It was pitch black inside and I quickly flicked the lights on, turning around to put my coat on the rack near the door.

"Where were you?" he asked with a lisp in his voice.

I quickly spun around to face Derek.

"HOLY CRAP!"  I screamed hyperventilating. "What the hell are you doing here? I never gave you keys!" I yelled in horror.

I had a very weak heart, getting easily scared and watching horror movies from behind cushions.

"I made a set for myself," he replied, dangling them on the end of his finger.

What was he doing making his own set of keys?

"GET OUT! And give me those keys!" I yelled angrily.

"Why, so you can give them to, who was it now?... Paul?" he asked.

"What the hell!?"

"I know there's something going on!"

"I met him yesterday!" I exclaimed, throwing my arms into the air.

"You expect me to believe that? Someone you met yesterday doesn't just pay for your surgery and doesn't expect repayment!"  he yelled.

"I am going to pay him back! Besides, it was your debt! You should work to paying it off,"

"Am I that useless?"

"Oh, is that a trick question?" I asked, "Let me think a sec," I said sarcastically. "Yes, you're completely useless!"

"Well then, here are the apartment keys of yours back and I'll be taking that 'broken down' car of mine back,"

"FINE."

I threw the keys to the crappy car at his face as he stormed out of the apartment. My gosh, I thought to myself. The guy's a stalker or something, breaking into people's apartments. I am not attracted to Paul or Stephen because they are about a million times richer than Derek and a billion times nicer than Derek. I am definitely not, I reassured myself as I washed my face.

I quickly took a shower and went back out to eat dinner. I put the frozen dinner in the microwave and patiently waited for it to cook. I grabbed the small plate out of the microwave and put it on the armrest of the couch as I flicked the T.V on. The news was on; Not exactly my first preference, but I might as well.

"Millionaire's son, Paul was caught on sight by bystanders saving a girl from attackers who were allegedly collecting loans. It is alleged that he paid off her one hundred thousand dollar debt to the attackers," the reporter started.

The picture of 'Paul' was shown and immediately I recognised him. I coughed and spluttered, choking on my dinner. "WHAT?!" I shrieked loudly.

Where did they get the story from? It wasn't my debt!

"Close friends of the heir of the million dollar empire; Tinh, Stephen and James strongly deny the allegations," the reporter continued.

I continued to watch attentively as I managed to choke down the packaged meal.

"The press is really clueless, he doesn't just go around paying off debts!" his friend Tinh argued.

"Really? Have you seen the girl?" the reporter questioned.

"No, but from what I've heard, she's just average,"

"Well, this story is certainly going to unravel!" the reporter exclaimed.

I turned the T.V off. Boy, was it complicated getting involved with millionaires and billionaires, Especially if you weren't rich as well. I put the plate into the sink and walked over to my coat which was hanging on the rack. I hadn't been home in two days and somehow I felt like it'd been years, despite the fact I'd been spending the time at the most luxury house I'd ever seen. I was relieved they didn't get my name or any pictures of me.

I took out the business card and analysed it carefully. I'm going to do that job, no matter how terrible it is. I need to pay him back and then get the press off my back. If they find out who I am, they'll thinking I'm scabbing off him! I looked up at the old clock on my wall; ten o'clock. It was pretty late, I thought to myself. I decided it was time to go to sleep so I headed off to my bedroom and climbed underneath the covers. It was freezing cold and my feet felt like they were stuck in ice cubes.

One day when I managed to pay off all my debts, I would get that heater fixed. I sighed to myself and closed my eyes. Five years ago, why did it have to happen? The event that altered the future and intertwined my fate with Derek; The debt I would forever have to pay.
