Chapter Six
We sat there in awkward silence, twiddling our thumbs as I looked around the expensive leather interior of the polished car. How rich was this kid exactly? Normal people don't just go around buying cars for random people.
"Oh good, he's here," Paul announced as he opened the door and got out.
I opened my door and followed, dawdling behind, my feet dragging against he ground.
"So, have you told her about the party on Saturday?" Stephen reminded.
"No, I haven't. You tell her,"
"Well, alright then. You owe me. I do not usually take random people shopping,"
"Yeah, yeah," Paul agreed.
I dawdled over and stood there strangely as they continued talking as though I weren't there.
"Have fun," Paul said sarcastically as he left.
"Get in," Stephen said, leaving the passenger door wide open.
I walked over and got into the car. I watched as he walked around the back of the car, got something out of the boot and then walked back to his seat and got in. I fastened my seatbelt as he started the engine.
"You've signed the contract, right?" he asked.
"Eh?"
"The contract, for the agency..." he reminded.
"Is that the temporary yellow carbon copy contract?" I replied.
"Yes," he replied.
"Yeah, I've signed it, why?"
"Oh ok then. You're expected to come to a function tomorrow night at eight. As in you have to come,"
"Where is it?" I asked.
"Here, just read this," he said, passing me a small cream coloured envelope.
I carefully prised it open and looked at the petite note enclosed inside. It was an invitation, with all the details I needed. At the bottom, it read: Feel free to bring friends or family. That's good, I thought to myself. I could bring Vivienne and Han. I thought silently to myself as we drove past scenic parks on the way to the shops.
"Wait, aren't the shops that way?" I asked, looking back to the road we'd just passed.
He didn't reply and just kept driving. I decided it'd probably be best to continue remaining dead silent. A few minutes later, I realised where he was taking me when presented before me was a large building full of new stores.
"See, this is the shops," he said as he found a parking spot.
I'd heard of this block of shops, but I'd never been. Apparently it was new and expensive too, owned by a large company of a friend of Paul's.
"Let's go," he said, opening my door, while I sat there staring at the exterior of the building.
I obediently followed him into the shops. The floor was so shiny, I could see my reflection inside. This place didn't seem like normal shops, it was like a hotel inside! Workers glanced up and looked at me strangely, so I decided I probably should have stopped looking at myself via the shiny floors.
"Aren't we meant to be going to a car dealer...?" I asked.
"No. Paul's got that covered by someone. My job is to take you here so you can buy something nice to wear,"
"Oh..."
"Anyway, I'm going to wait here and you can buy what you want from this shop. If you wanna leave this shop, tell me and I'll follow you,"
"But I don't know my way around,"
"Well, that's what you have me for." he replied.
I wandered around the large store, looking at nice dresses and skirts. Finally, I'd seen the prettiest dress I'd ever seen in my life. It was a light orangey-pink colour and it was made of smooth fabric. I took it off the rack and went to try it on.
After having several brawls with the zip, it finally agreed to zip up. It was a pretty nice dress, I thought to myself. I looked at the shiny price tag. Three hundred dollars?! I thought to myself. I could never afford a dress that costed that much! I quickly changed out and put the clothes back on the rack.
I went around cautiously for the rest of the time, making sure to check the price tag before trying something on. I couldn't find anything under two hundred dollars. I glanced out to see Stephen talking to someone on the phone and I decided to wander back, since I wasn't going to buy anything anyway.
"I'm done," I said as I walked out towards him.
He looked around me strangely.
"You're not carrying any bags...?" he asked.
"No," I replied, showing him my empty hands.
"I'm surprised." he laughed. "You couldn't find anything...or...?"
"Yeah, I couldn't find anything," I replied quickly.
We made our way back out to the carpark and I got into the car, buckling up. He started the engine and pulled out of the spot before driving me home.
