Chapter Two
"OI!" he yelled as he led me towards his car. I looked up, in the distance I could see someone approaching. He was around six foot and had dark orangey-brown hair and from what I could see, dark brown eyes. Was he a friend of his?
"Who's this?" the guy asked, referring to me as he approached us.
"Eh, don't worry," he replied.
"Well, that'll be your fifteenth girlfriend this year, so far," he remarked.
I gulped. "I'm not his girlfriend," I stated.
The guy chuckled a bit.
"Just messing with you," he laughed, slapping me on the back as he headed into the house.
So friendly, I thought to myself. I barely met the guy and he's acting as if we're best friends.
"Come on," he said, pulling me towards the car as I stood there, dumbfounded by this stranger.
"Who are you?" I asked, trying not to sound rude as I got into the car.
"Paul," he replied.
"Oh, ok,"
He started the car and turned on the GPS.
"Where's your house?" he asked.
"Uh... Unit 4/ 361 Adams Street," I replied.
"You live in an apartment block?"
"Well, not everyone's rich," I replied, taking it as an insult.
He looked at me strangely as though it hadn't been an insult and that he was somewhat offended. I pulled the clothes I'd changed out of earlier and covered myself with them. It really did feel quite awkward. Such a revealing dress.
He laughed to himself before heading towards the apartment. What was so funny? Had he never met a girl who was more reserved than others?
"We're here," I said as the car approached the apartments.
"Mhmm, ok," he said as he stopped the car. He bent down a bit and looked up at the old building. The paint was peeling from the bricks and there were cracks in the wall. "You actually live here?" he asked.
I nodded as I got out of the car. I didn't even get to turn around and say 'thanks' and he'd already sped off. I walked up the seven flights of stairs, holding the bundle of clothes as people from apartments looked out at me. Of course they were looking at me. What kind of strange person wears a strapless dress that looked expensive into a run down apartment? I grabbed my keys and unlocked the door. I walked inside and threw the bundle of clothes onto the couch. I waddled over to the answering machine to check if there were any messages. I pressed the button.
"One new message," it chimed, "Meet me at Adam Street Park, near the deserted oak, if you want to see Derek alive." came the message.
Oh great, I thought to myself. He's in trouble again. Why oh why didn't I just dump him? Oh, that's right, I owed him because he saved me once. I nearly forgot. Useless idiot.
I changed out and put on my cream coloured trench coat, a beanie and a thick scarf. I walked back out and got into my broken down old car, which barely worked. I started the car and headed towards the park which was a few blocks down. I parked the car and got out. It was freezing outside and I hugged myself as I walked over to the old oak.
"She's here!" I heard a yell.
I looked around me. Suddenly, bodies were being hurled against me. I felt a hard kick to my gut as I fell to the ground.
"Ow! Ow!" I yelled in pain. "What are you doing?" I wheezed.
"When do you intend on paying us that one hundred thousand dollars back?"
"One hundred...thousand?" I asked in shock.
Why did he borrow so much money?
"So when...?" they asked, grabbing my hair, pulling my head up.
"I'll pay it, I'll pay it," I said, giving in quickly.
"You better, or another one of these are gonna be hurled at you," they threatened as they threw a rock at my head.
"Arrgh!" I screamed. I covered the wound with my hand before taking it off and looking at it. There was blood. I was going dizzy and I couldn't see much.
"I'll pay it," I heard someone saying as they approached.
Everything was blurred and I felt weak. I could barely see anything clearly. Everyone turned into doubles and merged into smudges before it all turned black.
