10th Chapter : "Don't cry"

( Third person POV)

Days and weeks have passed, and the Gala's date finally came.

Days and weeks have passed, but Pyper and Vanessa still haven't talked. The twin sister was kind of avoiding her.

Sure, they'd eat at the same table in the cafeteria, and they'd see each other in class, but whenever their eyes met, and that happened a lot, Pyper would turn her head and break the contact. Vanessa never had the chance to talk to Pyper and of course, she never told anyone about the secret she discovered that night, at the Smith's house.

Brad and Vanessa practiced nonstop, together, at school. The teacher allowed them to use the music classroom on their free time. They practiced until they learned the classical music piece by heart, and no longer needed the music sheets to perform it.

Since that night, since Vanessa discovered who Pyper Smith really was, she never stepped back in the Smith's house...until today.

Vanessa is now in her room, checking herself out in front of her mirror, to make sure she looked good in the red dress she bought a week ago.

A smile slowly began to work its way on her lips, lips that were covered in a red lipstick, as she realized that her makeup was ''on point''.

"You look beautiful"

Vanessa slowly began to lose her smile, and put back on a serious face, when she saw a man's reflection in her mirror.

She turns around.

"Thank you"

Says Vanessa to her father, who just entered her room.

He was wearing a tuxedo and his blond hair was well combed and parted on the right. He looked elegant like always. Vanessa's father pushes his glasses up on his nose.

His green eyes are the only thing his daughter has inherited from him. They looked completely different. Vanessa looked more like her mother.

"Don't worry; I'm sure you'll do fine"

"I'm not worried"

That was a lie.

Just like before every performance, Vanessa was petrified. But she tried her best to stop herself from imagining the worst scenarios possible and stay positive. She didn't want people to know she was anxious. She wanted people to think of her as a strong woman.

The father sends a sad smile to his daughter. He then crosses his arms and clears his throat before speaking:

"Paul is waiting for you outside"

Says Mr. Francis.

Vanessa wasn't heading to the theater, at least not now.

Brad begged her during weeks to come to his house, an hour before the Gala officially starts, so that they could both enter the theater together and at the same time and she eventually ended up agreeing, hoping that, if she went to the Smith's house again, she'd have the chance to talk to Pyper.

So that's were she was heading.

Paul is going to drop her at the Smith's place and their driver, Albert, will drive them, Brad Pyper and her, to the theater, then to the school's principal, director's mansion, Mrs Brandon, where the Gala was going to take place.

"OK"

Answers the daughter.

She walks past her father, grabs her violin case that was waiting for her on the bed, and left her room.

But he catches her in the hallway.

"See you at the theaters"

He says then buries his hands inside his pockets.

"See you there father"

...........................................................

"Good evening Misses Vanessa"

The Smith's servant greeted our girl once she stepped inside the house for the second time in a month.

"Hello Marianna how are you?"

Greets back Vanessa.

Marianna's eyes widen and her smile grows.

"Misses Vanessa you look flawless. I'm sure mister Smith will be at a loss of words"

Vanessa blushes at Marianna's remark and thanks her.

"Speaking of him, where is Brad?"

Asks the girl in the red dress.

"Mister and Misses Smith are upstairs"

Vanessa thanks her then walks to the end of the hallway and gets to the spiral staircase. Once she arrives to the second floor, she starts hearing screaming. A fight between Brad and his sister.

She decides to follow the voices until she arrives in front of a mid-closed door.

"After all I've done for you, you don't even want to help me with this one?!"

Screams Brad.

"It's not that I don't want to! You know very well that I can't! I shouldn't even go to this stupid gala! People could recognize me!"

"Bullshit Pyper! That's bullshit! I'm asking you a favor and you don't want to help me so that Vanessa starts hating me and you can get rid of her! Just because she knows your little secret!"

Vanessa felt a pain in her chest.

Did Pyper really want to get rid of her?

"You only think about yourself! You're an egocentric bit-"

Brad was cut off by his sister who screamed even louder:

"Stop! Can't you just stop and shut the fuck up?!"

Her voice cracked. She lost control of her emotions.

"You of all people should know that I really can't do what you're asking for!"

Vanessa hears footsteps coming towards the door. She didn't have time to hide, so instead, she glued herself to the wall, hoping that the twins won't see her. But that didn't work.

Pyper swung the door open and only took a step or two outside the room when she noticed Vanessa from the corner of her eye.

The sister turns around and the first thing Vanessa notices about her are the tears on her cheeks. She then notices the beautiful and long dark blue strapless dress that she was wearing.

She wanted to grab her in her arms, hug her, and tell her to stop crying, that whatever it was, it was not worth her tears, but instead, she turned her head and looked elsewhere. She was mad, angry, and especially hurt by what she heard Brad said.

Pyper quickly wipes her tears away.

"Vanessa"

She whispers, but Brad still hears her and rushes outside of the room.

"Vanessa!"

He repeats once he sees her.

Only when the brother came, Vanessa turns back her head to look at him. In the process, she saw that Pyper's eyes never left her.

Brad was wearing a dark blue and elegant jacket and pants, on top of a white shirt, and that was enough to brighten Vanessa's mood.

She wondered if Brad dressed like that on purpose.

Remember when I said that Vanessa's mood brightened up?

Well it only lasted a few seconds, because her eyes landed on Brad's left hand and it made her smile and excitement fade away.

"Your hand..."

She almost made her violin case fall from her hand.

Brad's hand was alright, but his middle finger was strapped to his index.
