Chapter 6

After school Junior and I went surfing before Dad’s business partner comes over.  The sun was blazing and the water was perfect. It was a great afternoon. “Hey Carrie you ready?” Junior yelled to me. “Yup are you?” I yelled back. “Ready!” He said. We both lay down on our boards ready for the big waves that were coming. As the wave came closer we got up and stood on our board. You get the most amazing feeling while surfing a wave and you feel proud of yourself after you’ve succeeded. “Wow that was great!” I said Junior who was now beside me. “Yeah you’re getting really good” Junior complimented me. “Thanks you too bud” I said.

    When we were done surfing we went inside and just as this day was going well it decided to turn over a new leaf. Meaning the dinner went horrible. “Hey guys” Dad greeted us as we came through the sliding doors. “Hey Dad” we both said. Vivian gave us each looks like she doesn’t even care were here. “How are the waves?” Dad asked. “Great!” I exclaimed answering for both of us. “What’s for dinner tonight?” Junior asked. “Well I’m cooking a steak for all of us does that sound good?” Dad asked. Junior and I nodded but Vivian complained. “Orlando I had steak for dinner last night is there any way we could cook something else?” she asked while putting her hand on my dad’s arm and slowly moving it down. It was so gross to see. I still can’t believe Dad has yet to tell us they are together. I mean come on it’s so obvious. “But I already cooked four steaks” Dad said. “Orlando” Vivian said giving him puppy dog eyes. “Okay alright I’ll get some chicken out of the freezer” Dad gave in. Junior and I looked at each other both saying “what’s happened to dad?” but without talking out loud.  “Dad its okay Junior and I can eat steak” I said. Dad smiled. “Hunny he is making parmesan chicken now so we all should eat the same thing” Vivian said giving me another look. “ Come to the kitchen” she said to my Dad. Dad looked at us. “We can have it for lunch” we said. “Orlando!” Vivian called from the kitchen. “I should go make dinner again why don’t you guys go for a walk” Dad suggested and then went into the kitchen. Junior and I stayed for a second so we can hear anything they might say about them dating. We listened carefully.  “Orlando do you think we should tell them tonight” she asked. “Tell them what?” Dad said. “You know” Vivian said. She then looked at her hand. We heard enough and ran outside. Our hearts were racing. “Do you think Dad is engaged to Cruella?” Junior asked. “How I hope not” I said. “Should we go on a walk until dinner is ready” Junior re-said what Dad suggested. “Yeah sure let’s go” I said putting my arm around my brother. We decided we would walk to Blue Islanders and back, that should give us enough time to spare before dinner is ready. “So what happens if Dad does marry Vivian?” Junior asked kicking sand in front of him. We were walking along the shore line. The sun was setting and it was so beautiful. “I’m not sure, I guess she will be out step mom” I said. We shivered at the thought. “I don’t want her to be our new mom I like our real mom” Junior said. “Me too” I agreed.  “Want to go into the surf store again? I was going to buy some goggles” I asked. Junior nods a yes. We arrived at the store “Surf Flamingo’s” and entered. I looked across the store and of course Ryder is here. He comes up to me. “Hey Carrie” he said. “Hey” I said back. “Do you need help finding anything?” he asked. “No thank you I just came to get some goggles” I said. Ryder smiles and went to help another customer. I found a pair of goggles I liked and went to the counter to pay. As we were leaving Ryder came up to me. “Carrie! Wait up” he said. I looked back and he was now standing in front of me. “What are you doing this weekend?” “I don’t think anything why?” I asked smiling. “Well I was wondering if you wanted to go surfing on Saturday” he said. I was in complete shocked that he asked me that. Junior nudged me. “Yeah sure” I smiled. He smiled back and said “Great”. We then said bye and he went back into the store. Junior and I left and started to walk home. “He defiantly just asked you out n a surf date” Junior said excitedly. “It’s not that big of a deal we are just friends going surfing” I said. “Then how come you got all nervous and shy in there” Junior said not believing me. I shrugged. “Ryder and Carrie sitting in a tree K-I-S-S-I-N-G” Junior started to sing. “Oh come on Junior that’s so pre-school” I said laughing. Junior laughed. “I can’t wait until we tell Free she will be so excited for you” Junior said. Perfect time to ask him about her I thought. “So Free she’s nice isn’t she?” I asked. “Yeah she’s the only friend I’ve made so far at school”. “Do you think she’s pretty?” I asked. “I guess so” Junior said quietly. “I think she may have a crush on you”. “Really?” Junior’s face lit up. I nodded. Junior smiled. “You so like her!” I said. “Do not” he disagreed. “Whatever you say bro” I said not believing him. “You have a crush on Ryder don’t you?” he wondered. “I’m not sure yet he’s nice though”.  Junior didn’t ask any more questions. It was probably because I’ll ask about Free.
