Chapter 8

“You okay?” Miles turned to me and broke me out of my shock daze. “Yeah yeah I’m fine” I shyly smiled. “Okay good” he smiled. I felt myself blush. Miles got up to go get changed. I decided to take this opportunity to talk to his Dad. “Hi Mr. Drenth, I’m Carrie a friend of Miles, you work on my Dad’s set don’t you?” I asked. “Yes I do” he said. “Do you know Vivian Matting as well?” I asked. His face turned pure white. Literally. “Yes” he said. Bingo! Ok now for more questioning. “What do you do on my Dad’s set?” I asked half hoping he’s not going to say what I’m thinking because it wouldn’t be a very funny joke. “I’m his co-assistant” he said. “Oh so you know him very well then?” I asked. He nodded. “Well his birthday is coming up and I want to know exactly what he would like could you find that out for me and meet my brother our friend and I at the mall tomorrow morning?” I suggested.  “Of course anything for my boss” he said. Great!  Step 1 now completed. I felt really proud of myself. Miles then comes out and goes “Ready to go Pops”. “Ready” he said. “Bye” Miles waved to me I waved back. “Oh wait Mr.Drenth!” I called running up to them. They both turned around. “Don’t tell my father about the present I want it to be a surprise” I said making the plan sound more realistic. “Don’t worry I won’t say a thing” and he crossed over his heart. I thanked him and I then went to find Junior and Free. They were talking about the history behind all the sea creatures. “Guys!” I exclaimed. “Yeah?” they both said. “I got the guy Vivian cheated on with to go to the mall tomorrow morning!” They looked amazed. “How?” they asked. “Mile’s father is the guy and I just saw him!”    “That’s such a coincidence!” Free said. “I know!” I cried excitedly. We then discussed the plan for tomorrow. It was great and I can’t wait to see it all play out! I feel like a terrible person though for ruining my Dad’s relationship but then again it’s already ruined so it’s not such a big deal. I wonder what his reaction will be once we have the evidence. Will he be happy or sad? Probably both I thought.

      I woke up bright and early the next day. If this plan was going to work we had to do everything exactly right. No bends in between or distractions. I gathered up the material we would need which really only consisted of a video camera for footage and a fake list of ideas for my Dad’s birthday gift, you know to make it all seem realistic. “You ready?” Junior walked into my room. “Yup” I said. “Do you think Dad would get mad at us for doing this?” he asked. I saw the worry in his eyes. “Maybe a little but he will be glad to know it’s for the better”. “The better for him or us,” Junior looked at me. I shrugged. “Let’s go Free is meeting us at the mall” I said. Junior and I walked downstairs and Vivian was talking with my Dad. They noticed us come in and they went completely silent. Weird I thought. “You guys all set?” Dad asked us. “Yup” we say. “Vivian said that she will drive you guys so Jefferson could have the morning off, isn’t that nice of her?” Dad said kissing Vivian on the lips. “Super” I mumbled. “Ew gross!” Junior said in disgust. They laughed. “Have fun” Dad said leading us to the front door. We said bye and he closed the door for us. Once the door was firmly closed and we were beside the car, Vivian turned to look at us. “Okay look I don’t want to be here more than you guys do so let’s make this shopping trip quick” she gave us a glare. Whoa Vivian on the outside and Cruella on the inside. How my Dad doesn’t see that, beats me. Still stunned by what she said we nodded and opened the car door and slid into our seat. The car ride was only 10 minutes but it felt like hours of tortured silence. We finally arrived at the Mall of Sunrise Beach and saw Free waiting for us at the front doors. “What took you guys so long?” Free wondered. Vivian automatically turned from being mean to really nice and caring. “Sorry darling we ate a late breakfast”. What a joke I thought.  “It’s okay what store are we going to?” she asked. “I was thinking about Betsy Johnson?” I suggested. That’s where I told Mile’s Dad to meet us. I eyed Junior and Free they got the messaged and quickly agreed to go there. We walked past the food courts and another surf store. Not the one Ryder works at though , that one is on the beach. He’s probably in school right now. Dad told us we could have the morning off because this is the only free time Vivian had. She’s probably too busy hooking up with Jerry. I shook the feeling off. It’s bad enough she is dating by Dad but cheating on him as well!  She will not get away with it so, so help me this plan will work.

   We arrived at the mall shortly after. Free was waiting for us outside Forever 21. She was dressed in all black like she was on a mission or something. “She’s defiantly going to be asking questions” I whispered to Free. “It’s a fashion trend so why shouldn’t I be wearing it” Free said. “It’s not a trend it’s a statement” I laughed. “Well Vivian already earned her status” Junior said jumping into the conversation. We all turned around to see Vivian standing right behind us, hearts pounding hoping she didn’t hear anything. “Ready to go?” she asked and turned off her blue tooth. Thank goodness. My heart relaxed and we entered the store. “Let’s stay in Forever 21 before Mr. Drenth comes” I whispered to Junior and Free. We roamed around the store Free and I picking up a few things we thought were cute and Junior keeping an eye out for Mr. Drenth. Vivian was on her phone the whole time and didn’t even bother talking to us which is fine by me. We brought walki talkies just in case we needed to contact each other. Even though we all have phones we thought it would be more James Bond if we had walkie talkies. I was just going up stair when a call starts to come through. I take out the walkie talkie I turned to the correct signal and I heard Junior say “The Cricket Is in the cocoon”. That was our code name we decided when Mr.Drenth arrived at the mall. I zoomed down the escalator and made my why to Junior and Free was just joining us as well. “Where is he?” she asked. “Just coming through the revolving doors” Junior pointed.  “Mr. Drenth!” we exclaimed and ran towards him. Vivian was too preoccupied to notice. “Hey guys” he said taking out a notepad. “This is Junior and Free” I said introducing them. “Okay so I asked Mr. Blue what he would lik and he said that anything would be fine but he really likes surfing and old classic rock music” Mr. Drenth explained. Oh right I remember that I know exactly what to get him now but not at the moment we have a plan to succeed at. “Oh that’s great! Thanks!” I said. I brushed my finger against my nose which signals the start of the plan. “Do you guys mind if we just pop into Forever 21 once more I saw this dress I really like and I may want to wear it to the party” I said. “I’ll come with you” Free said. “I just have to go to the bathroom” Junior said and patted the bag I gave to him with the camera in it. “I’ll go with you girls” Mr. Drenth said. We went inside the store and we looked back to see Junior pulling out the camera. Free and I spot Vivian by one of the mannequins. Funny thing is the mannequin was wearing the same outfit she was. I guess she didn’t notice since she was still on her phone the way we left her.  Mr. Drenth didn’t notice her yet but we decided to walk right past her so he can know she’s here. “Hey Vivian who ya chatting with” I said with as much enthusiasm as I could.  She looked up at me and her face went pure white when she saw Mr. Drenth. “Oh Mr. Drenth what are you doing here?” she asked seeming so innocent. “Well Caribbean and Junior asked me to come and help pick out their Dad’s birthday gift” He explained. “Oh! I am just helping her find a dress for the party” Vivian said acting more cheerful than usually. “What a coincidence” Mr. Drenth said. “Ya” Vivian said twisting her hair with her fingers. Free and I exchanged looks. Vivian then probably realized we were standing their cause she said “Guys do you think you’re okay here? Mr. Drenth and I have some business to look over” she said. We nod knowing this will be the chance we get. When they were a few feet ahead Free took out her walkie talkie. “The Cricket is on the move it’s with the butterfly” she said to Junior. That means that Vivian is with Mr. Drenth now. Junior looked at us and gave us thumbs up. We walked out of the store and followed them to a secretive place. We stood behind a fake tree and we could see the whole scene. Junior ran up beside us.  Mr.Drenth pinned Vivian up against the wall and they started kissing, and kissing and kissing. Ew PDA I thought.  Free and I stopped watching since it was disgusting and went back to the store. Junior stayed to get more footage and probably about 10 minutes after Vivian and Mr. Drenth came walking through the glass doors acting as if they weren’t just doing what they were doing. “Where did you guys go?” I asked. It looked like they were searching for a cover up story. “We were just at Surf Dreams” Vivian said. “Ya we thought your Dad would like something from their but we didn’t see anything” Mr. Drenth said. “Oh I see” I said eyeing them. Just then Junior came back. “That was the longest bathroom break ever” Free chuckled. We all looked at each other all wishing this planned worked. “What store next?” Vivian asked. “How about Betsy Johnson they have nice dresses there” I suggested. We stayed behind Cruella De Ville and Mr. Drenth. “Did the cocoon hatch?” I whispered. “Flying south” Junior said. That means we got the evidence we needed to prove to my Dad about this all. We all high fived each other and probably all thought of the same question that just popped into my mind. How are we going to break the news to my Dad?
