I woke up to find my vision sideways. My head was on Cole's lap as I laid on the seat with my knees tucked in like a ball. Instantly I sprung up from my position a little uncomfortable about where my head was near.
Cole only seemed to notice me wake up as he took out the earphones in his hears hitting pause on his iPod.
It had to be at least 1 or 2 in the afternoon now. I took out my phone confirming my accusation that it was about 2 o'clock already.
"Good morning sunshine," Cole spoke directing his attention to me.
"Technically, it's afternoon," I said with a playful smirk on my face.
"Touché," he said.
"So where are we now?" I asked looking out the window for any sign but all I saw was green grass and distant trees in the background.
"Well about an hour ago the train conductor said that we've just crossed into Texas so I'm assuming we're still in Texas," he explained.
I nodded and wondered what to do until 5 when the next stop would be.
In the meantime I played games on my phone, listened to my iPod, and even played games with Cole.
He had a deck of cards in his backpack so he taught me a bunch of different games to play. He told me his dad used to always play cards and that's how he started. At first Cole was going easy on me and let me win, but by the time we were finishing he was kicking my ass.
Before we knew it the train was stopping for its final stop of the day. It was only 5 o'clock.
"Hello passengers, this is your conductor speaking. We have reached our destination for the day. If you are joining us to California, we will be departing again at 7 o'clock sharp tomorrow morning. Please come on time with your ticket ready. Thank you and welcome to El Paso, Texas," the conductor spoke quickly and abruptly. He wanted to get off this train just as much as the rest of us.
However, I didn't realize the train ride would have such a long delay over night. What was I suppose to do until tomorrow morning? More importantly where was I suppose to go?
"Lake are you ok?" Cole asked noticing my confusion.
"Uh yea I guess, I just didn't know we were having a lay over," I said looking at him as he chuckled beside me. "Is this some kind of joke to you? I don't have a place to stay!" I exclaimed.
"Relax. It's just that you're freaking out over nothing. We'll find a hotel or something, it'll be alright," he comforted me.
We got up from our seats and left the train off to find a place we'd be able to sleep for the night.
The city of El Paso wasn't that big so we were able to walk easily from place to place, well Cole walked, I rode my skateboard.
Just minutes into our walk we had found a motel near the train station. We walked up to the office inside a small building where there was only two fold up chairs that served as the 'waiting room' and what I'm assuming was suppose to be a front desk. Dirt and dust balls were forming in the corners of the room. The whole place just seemed grimy and disgusting. I can only imagine what the rooms looked like.
"No way I am not staying here! Even if it is just for one night," I said to Cole refusing to touch anything.
"Yeah I agree. Lets get out of here before a cockroach eats us alive!" He exclaimed grabbing my hand and pulling me out of there.
We continued our search for a little longer refusing to go near anywhere that just looked like it would be gross. Soon enough though we came across a nice Hilton. It looked really expensive from the outside but it was the only place to stay that wasn't disease infested.
