Beca's pov
Its the first day back home and for once I'm really happy with my life. Jesse and I have arranged to meet up to hang out this afternoon which, I hate to admit, I'm really excited about. It's about 10 am when I hear a knock on my bedroom door, "come in!" The door swings open and I see Chloe standing there with two medium sized tubs of ice cream, "so are you gonna tell me all about your weekend with Jesse?" I roll my eyes at her girly behaviour before getting up, "if there's ice cream involved, hell yes." She laughs as we head out to the lounge room.We are both curled up on the couch with 50 first dates playing on the Tv in the background. I take another spoonfull of my ice cream before continuing on my story, "Then we sort of made out?" I say hoping Chloe won't make a big deal out of it. Of course, she does. A loud squeal rings through the apartment, "did that make out lead to anything?" I roll my eyes as she wiggles her eyebrows at me. I look down at my ice cream before quietly answering, "maybe." Chloe looks at me suspiciously as I feel a blush creep up my neck. "Did you guys-" I throw a pillow at her to shut her up, "Oh my god, Beca! You slept with him?" I burry my head in my hands, "yeah, shuddup." I say as I hear my phone ring. I walk over to the kitchen counter to answer it. As I hear what the voice is saying I stumble back and lean against the couch. My stomach drops and I feel as though I could've just been shot right then and there. I hang up the phone as Chloe looks at me, "Beca are you okay?" I turn to face Chloe, my face even more pale than usual, "I-I have to go." With that I grab my keys and race out the door.
I take the quickest route to the hospital, swearing at the minimal traffic I encounter on the way. I burst through the door and make my way to the reception desk. The lady behind the counter directs me to a specific waiting room and that's when the waiting game began. I fiddled with my nails and read all the magazines cover to cover twice each until I saw a doctor walk out of a surgery room. "Ms Cathy Heit?" I stand up and walk over to him, "She's on her way but I'm Natalie's Aunty, Beca Mitchell." He looks at me and there's a long silence before he takes a deep breath, "I'm sorry, but she didn't make it." Everything around me begins to spin and I feel myself drop to my knees as a pair of arms hold me. I look up to my left to see that Cathy has just arrived. We hold eachother for what seems like forwver before I'm able to talk again, "what happened?"
"Natalie was in a hit and run on a back street. She wasn't found until another car drove past and called the ambulance, by then she was unconcious and had lost a lot of blood." I look over at Cathy, she hasnt said a word since she got here, but she doesn't have to. Her face says it all. Cathy's usually bright eyes are cold and distant with a glazing of tears. Her lips tremble with every word the doctor says and her cheeks are stained with tear tracks. I hold her tighter as the doctor continues, "we tried everything we could but Natalie had a very rare blood type of o-. This means she could only get more o- blood, the universal donor. Although, only about 7% of the worlds population have that blood type and unfortunately she passed away before we could get any. I'm very sorry for your loss." He turns on his heels and walks away. I'm left shocked, empty and trying to support a broken mother who lost her husband and who has now lost her only child. "It's my fault," that's the first thing Cathy has said and I barely hear the hoarse whisper, "I shut her out after Jamie and she ran away." I hold Cathy tight as another sob racks through her body, "no it's not Cathy. Don't you dare say that. You've been a brilliant mother and she loved you dearly." Cathy just sobs into my arms as I pull out my phone and text chloe.
To Chloe Baby:
Hey. At hospital. Can you set up guest bedroom? Cathy is going to stay with us for awhile. Thanks.I show Cathy out to my car and take her home to the apartment. As soon as she reaches the bed she falls asleep. I walk out of the room to see Chloe, "Beca, what happened?" Her voice is soft and scared. I can't face her right now so I turn and walk into my room closing the door behind me I finally break. I slide down the door with the tears finally spilling over and running down my cheeks. I sit there for a very long time. The next thing I know Chloe is knocking on the door asking if I want food. I don't reply so she leaves and I crawl into my bed and lie there. I call up work and get the next week off. At 10 o'clock my phone rings, lighting up with Jesse's contact. I swipe the screen towards the left, ignoring the call. I don't sleep that night. I lay there think I ng about how scared she would have been, how much pain she would have felt and how I wasn't there to save her.
Bit of a depressing chapter but, I don't know, that happens I guess. I did really love Natalie, so I kinda regret doing this but, oh well, please don't hate me! Xx H
