Claire stared out the window, watching people pour through the front gates. The Haunted House was just starting. She saw Massie talking to Brent which made her shudder. Why does Massie have a perfect life? Perfect friends, perfect house, perfect reputation. All of these things made Claire hate Massie even more.
"Whatcha looking at?" Layne asked as she chewed on a candy apple.
"People," Claire replied back.
"Do you wanna go over there?" Layne asked while joining Claire by the window.
"There's two bodyguards. If they catch us, it'll ruin my reputation and embarrass me even more than the lunch scene," Claire mumbled.
"We can sneak in. And remember the revenge plan?" Layne asked. This made Claire smile.
"Should we do it?" Claire smiled.
"Totally. This is our chance to ruin Massie Block," Layne clapped her hands.
"We're gonna have to dress up in something to hide our faces," Claire suggested.
"No. Can't we just sneak in through the back?" Layne offered. Claire smacked herself in the forehead for not thinking of it first. Layne opened up her backpack and pulled out everything.
"Rope, check. Binoculars, check," Layne said to herself.
"What do you need all that for?" Claire asked while Layne went over her list.
"This can be useful when we go over there," Layne deadpanned. Claire shrugged and lead the way down the stairs.
"Let's use the back door. It's easier for sneaking out from behind," Claire suggested. Claire nodded and unlocked the back door that's never been used.
Lots of people crowded the front lawn, laughing and admiring all the decorations. Claire had to stop to admire them too. It looked ah-mazing. Why did I start this big fight, Claire asked herself. The big stone mansion looked creepy with all the fog. Like a real haunted house.
"Earth to Claire," Layne snapped, copying Massie's sassy tone. The bonfires set up on the Guesthouse lawn were crackling with the woodsy fire smell. It reminded Claire of the Lake Placid field trip. Where Massie and Claire got along.
"Sorry," Claire whispered. There they were. Standing behind the mansion.
"Which one is Massie's bedroom,"Layne asked and reached into her bag for the rope.
"Why?" Claire asked, eyeing the rope.
"So we can get into her room. That's where we can start the plan," Layne sighed.
"What if she's in her room?" Claire crossed her arms.
"A girl like Massie ALWAYS knows to lock her bedroom door when a big social event is happening. Like now," Layne deadpanned. Claire smacked herself in the forehead like before.
"So, what are we gonna do? Shimmy up the drain pipe?" Claire asked.
"Easy, Rizzo," Layne joked.
"Fine. It's the window to the right. Right by her balcony," Claire pointed out. Layne nodded and tied a loop into the rope. With a deep breath, she threw it against the balcony, hoping it would loop on one of the poles.
"I can't believe we're doing this," Claire muttered to herself as she watched Layne continuously flail the rope high in the hair. After what seemed like the fiftieth try, Layne managed to get a loop on of the poles.
"Perfect," Layne said to herself. Layne tied the other end of the rope to a hook Layne placed in the ground. "That should hold."
Layne began climbing up the rope, shaking her hands as she made the big climb. Claire rolled her eyes.
