Massie watched from her bay window as workers rushed around, making sure everything was in it's place. Her phone started ringing, which broke her from her daydream.
"Hello?" Massie asked as she answered her phone. It was Brent.
"Hey, so what time should we come?" Brent asked.
"Like, right now," Massie replied while rolling her eyes. She paced around her bedroom and admired her costume on the mannequin. It wore a white, willowy dress with a gold belt wrapped around the waist. It was perfect for showing off her skinny stomach. The wrist would have a thick gold bracelet on each wrist to match the belt. A gold necklace would add to her neck with gold sandals on her pedicured feet. On her hair, an authentic gold headpiece would finish the look. It was the best costume in the history of costumes.
"Oh, sorry. We should be there in an hour and a half or so," Brent assured.
"Ok," Massie managed and hung up. Right as she threw the phone on her bed, it started ringing again.
"Ugh, hello?" Massie complained as she picked up the phone.
"Hey, Mass!" Alicia chirped over the phone. Massie groaned.
"What time should we come over?" Alicia asked. Massie checked the time. She was gonna need a lot of time to do her makeup and hair.
"Be here in an hour. Brent's gonna be there by then and I don't feel like talking to him," Massie muttered.
"Does this mean you're dumping him?" Alicia questioned.
"We'll talk later. Just hurry up," Massie replied. She hung up and turned her phone on silent. She can not be distracted. She hurried to her bathroom and sat at the vanity. Massie looked for her concealer and caked it all on perfectly. She applied liquid eyeliner and lightly put blue eye-shadow on her eyelid. After the makeup was done, she put on her costume. Massie stood in front of her full length mirror and posed.
"Cleopatra would have loved this," Massie said to Bean and put her hands on her hips. Massie got out her flat iron and began to do her hair. All of it took fifty minutes. Her friends would arrive any minute. She turned off her bathroom light and looked downstairs. It was completely dark which made the haunted house perfect. She locked her bedroom door (obviously so someone doesn't sneak in) and headed downstairs.
A lump of pride hung in Massie's throat. Everything was amazing.
"Don't you look adorable," Kendra squealed once she saw her daughter.
"Very nice," William said and smiled.
"My friends should be here soon and Dylan's Candy Bar should be here too," Massie announced.
"Sounds great. This is gonna be so fun!" Kendra exclaimed and clapped her hands.
"Yep," Massie said when the doorbell rang. Dylan, Alicia, and Kristen slammed open the door.
"You look great!" Kristen chirped. Massie laughed and posed.
"So do you!" Massie chirped back.
"Let's take a couple pictures of you all," Kendra suggested. The girls gathered in front of the stone fireplace covered in cobwebs and posed for the camera.
"Wonderful!" Kendra shouted. After pictures, the girls hung out in the kitchen.
"This Haunted House is so scary," Dylan confessed as she looked around the whole room. A bunch of actors would be stationed in different rooms to give a good scare. Clowns, evil scientists, and a bunch more would be here.
"I know," Massie smiled. Massie checked the clock. It started to get dark which meant people would be arriving soon.
"Wanna go outside to meet Brent?" Kristen asked.
"Not really. I'm gonna dump him soon," Massie admitted. The girls gasped. A lot of "it's ok's" and "don't worry about its" filled the room.
"Derrington is my one and only," Massie said.
"Aww," Her friends cooed.
"So, where are we gonna hide from him?" Dylan asked.
"I think I may know a place," Massie smiled.
They left the kitchen and through the scary clowns and spiders, they escaped through the back door. They ran across the grass while darkness surrounded them. It was foggy out which was perfect for the event. Massie opened the door to Cabana #3 and they all piled in. In the Cabana was a variety of blankets and pillows and a table filled with good food.
"Wow. What's this?" Alicia asked and dumped a handful of trail mix into her mouth.
"This is our private space. Since the house is being used, we can hide out here. No one will know," Massie replied.
"Perfect," Dylan hollered and clapped her hands. Massie peered outside and saw a Dylan's Candy Bar truck in the driveway. Brent got out of the front seat and smoothed down his hair. Massie's heart dropped.
"He's here," Massie whispered. Her stomach felt sick. She couldn't handle being with a guy who was so nice and understanding. Kristen reached over and closed the curtain. Massie's phone starting ringing.
"Massie, the candy cater is here. I think they want to see you," Kendra said. Massie sighed. Instead, she simply hung up and threw her phone on one of the pillows.
"Massie, it's ok. We can go say hi for five seconds and come back," Alicia offered.
"Yeah, you don't want him to think you're hiding from him. We'll come with you,"Dylan agreed.
"Promise you won't leave me?" Massie asked and held out her pinky. Her friends pinky promised her and together they left the Cabana.
"Hey!" Massie managed, remembering to act cool.
"Hey!" Brent asked. Next to him was a gorgeous woman, dressed in jeans and a stylish blouse.
"This is my mom," Brent introduced. Brent's mom held out her hand and shook all of the girl's hands.
"Nice to meet you," Massie said politely.
"This looks so fun!" Dylan, Brent's mom, chirped.
"These are my friends. Alicia, Dylan, and Kristen," Massie introduced.
"Another Dylan?" Brent's mom laughed. Dylan laughed along with her.
"I'll go get the employees to unload the candy. Be right back!" Brent's mom rushed off towards the truck.
"It's great to see you again," Brent smiled sheepishly.
"Yep," Massie replied, not knowing what to say.
"Can I talk to you for a second? In private?" Brent asked, widening his eyes. Massie looked to her friends for help. She could NOT be alone with him.
"Actually, we have to go help with the Haunted House real quick. Maybe a little later? We're really busy," Alicia jumped in. If it wasn't for Alicia's beauty, Brent would've said no.
"I guess that's alright. I better go help my mom," Brent replied and sauntered to his mom. Massie sighed a relief.
"Thank you so much," Massie took deep breaths.
"We'll never leave you in such trouble," Kristen smiled. "Now let's go back to the Cabana." The girls took off again to the Cabana. Massie looked back at Brent but the fog swallowed him up. Massie prayed that the choice of dumping him wouldn't swallow her up.
