She doesn't say I love you a lot

But in some mornings
when I wake just before she realises I'm up
I could feel her fingers tracing
Over my cheekbones, my eyebrows, my forehead, the bright of my nose
Over the outline of my lips, the skin at the rim of my clothes
Lighter than feathers
Warmer than summer
Sending me chills with her soft, gentle touch
She doesn't really have to say much

We don't exchange I love yous a lot

But in those nights
After one of those small, tiring fights
She'd slip under the bed sheets when all is dark
Thinking I was asleep and we were falling apart
And then she'd hold me tight in her arms
Like she'd protect me from her harm
She'd start crying into my chest
Tightening her arms around me without rest
And then I'll start crying, too
Holding her to let her know it's through
The shouting, the yelling, the fight, the night
Waiting for the next morning, when everything's alright
We don't say I love you
We don't really have to

Because all the times that we went wrong
All her painting, all my songs
Because all the times we exchange smiles
Talking over the phone when we're parted by miles
They are all the evidence we need
To feel what even strangers can see
We don't need I love yous to be our reminder
Of how we're always gonna be each other's
