40. A NEW DISCOVERY
1 Week Later
As the days passed, it started to become easier for Aiden and Julian to pretend like nothing had ever happened – all the horrific events that transpired nearly a week ago with Aiden and his family on the night that he finally decided to come out to them once and for all.
Aiden knew ahead of time that the dinner was only going to go one of two ways – surprisingly good or terribly bad.
Still, Aiden felt before his family had even arrived that things were more than likely going to go downhill, so in a way, he was somewhat prepared for what had later unfolded. However, in spite of everything that occurred that night, from Aiden reconciling and forgiving Kyle for all his past offenses up to the way that he finally unleashed all the pent-up frustration, pain, and anger he'd been drowning in in regard to his father for the last decade or so, despite all that madness, Aiden and Julian managed to get through it together.
That's what really mattered.
"I'm glad we finally got the time to do this, just hang out by ourselves without having to worry about some psychotic bitch running around wanting to shank us... well, mostly just your hapless boyfriend." Cassie looked over at Julian sitting next to her on the couch and laughed, being a tease. "It almost feels like the old days again."
Julian nodded, wondering what Kyle and Aiden were up to.
"On a more serious note, these last three days over here with you have really been amazing," Julian said. "And I don't know if I've told you yet, but thanks for not destroying the place. I'm surprised you made it this long without completely trashing my little humble abode."
"You had it damn near spotless when I first got here, I was too afraid to even touch anything for fear of leaving a dirty smudged fingerprint behind on something," Cassie joked. "It really sucks that I have to go back to New York this weekend, though. I wish I could stay here with you and Aiden for a little longer, despite the fact that there's a madwoman out to get him..." She paused at how calmly that had all come out. "It's odd that I just said that like it isn't downright disturbing."
Julian playfully rolled his eyes, not ready for the dejected state he knew he'd experience once she was officially gone.
"You know that I don't want you to leave, right? I'm not looking forward to it at all. But, you, unfortunately, have a job that you need to get back to and I have a man at – what I guess I can probably now call my second home – who's expecting me back today. So, our little get-together must sadly come to an end."
Cassie tried to keep from sulking because she knew that she and Julian couldn't stay holed up in his condo forever. Nonetheless, Cassie and Julian were lucky to have spent these last few days with one another. They hadn't taken it for granted at all.
