37. SECOND THOUGHTS

Wednesday

After a carefree and somewhat eye-opening stay at the Pennyroyal Hotel, Aiden and Julian were finally checking out.

For a short while, they had almost managed to forget about all the problems they left – or tried to leave – behind while on this little romantic getaway of theirs. Everything had been going great until Aiden got a phone call from Greg Mathis - the cop who'd been assigned to Aiden's case.

Greg worked for the Bradford City Police Department and today, of all days, was the day that he decided to call Aiden to tell him that his car had been found; the very expensive black Ferrari that Clarissa had escaped in the night she assaulted Jeremy Pine and held Aiden and Cassie at gunpoint.

Aiden had long accepted the fact that he may never see his car again, let alone get it back in one piece. However, according to Greg, he apparently had that opportunity because shockingly enough, Clarissa had left the car completely unscathed. Still, that wasn't enough to make Aiden want it back.

In fact, he told Greg to break it down and sell it for scraps because he wanted no parts of it.

Before their phone call ended, Aiden eventually got around to asking Greg if he and his team had come up with any new leads on Clarissa's whereabouts.

The response he got in return was disappointing – no one's yet to discover anything new since the incident that went down with her and him at Jeremy Pine's house.

"He told me he's packing and leaving town until that crazy broad is caught. I told him I don't blame him for it," Greg informed Aiden before tastelessly adding, "One brush with death was enough for him, I guess. So it looks like Clarissa's all yours now."

"Thanks for the update, Mathis. You've been such a big help." Aiden rolled his eyes and hung up the phone. His patience had been growing thin ever since Greg mentioned Clarissa's name. "What a fucking idiot. He and his whole fucking department are worthless. I don't even know why I'm wasting my money on them. They're never going to find her."

Julian's mind had been elsewhere, so he really didn't talk much on the long elevator ride down to the hotel's lobby.

He wondered how different things would be for him and Aiden after they - well, Aiden mainly – finally came out to Aiden's entire family... who they just so happened to have plans with this afternoon.

"You're quiet," Aiden said. "Are you okay?"

Julian didn't respond, only continued to stare off into space.

This made Aiden nervous. It couldn't have been the phone call from Greg that threw Julian in this weird funk, Aiden thought to himself. Once he really started to contemplate the reasons why Julian might be acting so weird, Aiden came to the realization that he's been in a stinky mood ever since this morning.
