42. REASONS WHY
The drive to Davina's house had been an unbelievably nerve-racking one for Aiden and Julian. They kept quiet on most of the drive while they followed in behind Greg Mathis' unmarked cop car.
"I have so many questions to ask her," Aiden muttered, talking mostly to himself as a hundred and one thoughts ran throughout his broken mind. "Fuck! I can't believe she played me like this."
"Promise me that you won't do anything stupid when we get there," Julian said after they reached their destination. Greg purposely parked two houses down from Davina's. Aiden and Julian parked behind him, waiting for Aiden to get out and make his move. Julian, on the other hand, was still hesitant to let Aiden go, so he grabbed him by the wrist and said with pleading eyes, "You're here to get her to confess. You're not here to fight or argue, okay?"
"I know, Jules," Aiden replied. "I promise, I'll be on my best behavior."
Julian reluctantly withdrew his hand in order for Aiden to test the mic strapped to his chest; it sat on top of the bulletproof vest that he and everyone else wore thanks to Greg and his men coming fully prepared.
"Can you hear me okay, Mathis?" Aiden asked. Greg stuck his thumb out of his window. "When I'm ready for you to come in and make the arrest, or if something goes down and I need you, the code word is vacation. Got it?" Greg stuck his thumb out of the window again. "Alright, let's get this party started."
"Wait, why vacation?" Julian asked Aiden just as he was about to get out of the car. He didn't really care what the code word meant, he just wanted a little more time with his lover before he left him.
Up until now, Julian had been fine with the whole Get Davina To Confess On Tape plan, however, letting Aiden go and talk to her all on his own was going against everything that Julian believed in, even though he and Aiden had spent half of the drive over here fussing about it.
And it hadn't done either of them any good because Aiden had already had his mind made up and in this rare case, Julian couldn't do or say anything to get him to change it; they eventually came to the conclusion to let Aiden go in alone, and what made things worse, Greg backed Aiden up on the plan.
Julian was beyond furious about it.
Aiden's argument was that Davina would be more willing to open up to him if he were alone and not surrounded by a bunch of intimidating cops.
If he was going to get her to actually confess, she couldn't feel threatened or uneasy, which she undoubtedly would if Greg, his men, and Julian were all hovering around her.
"The code word is vacation because once all this shit is over, you and I will be taking a very, very long one away from this wretched town," Aiden replied to Julian's question, wishing his lover would have a little more faith in him. "I'll be alright, Jules." Aiden leaned across the armrest and kissed Julian. "You trust me, don't you?"
