Akila's Flashback

I stoked the fire at the camp. Rayyah and mummy were in the tent arguing again and I hated it when they did that. In case you didn't know, Rayyah was my older sister.

We were gypsies. We were the Mustow tribe. We are the biggest tribe of gypsies known to mankind and we're family.

I shivered in my coat and drew it tighter around me. The nights have been cold and long. I stamped my feet, trying to get them to warm up. My bandanna was slipping from my head, so I took my frozen fingers out of my pockets and readjusted it. That's when I saw her.

Nadya.

Nadya Mustow was my best friend in the whole entire world. But she had died years ago. She got a sickness and her parents refused to take her to the hospital. She died in her sleep and they buried her the next day. That was back in Poland. We're in Germany now.

As I was saying, Nadya beckoned to me to come to her. I felt immediate warmth. As if in a trance I picked my feet up and walked straight to her. I couldn't believe it. "AKILA!" My grandmother Dayeah called out. My attention drifted away from Nadya and I tramped to my grandmother's tent. "Akila, please put out the fire. No one is going to stay up with it all night." I shrugged and grabbed a bucket of water near the entrance. I poured the water over the fire and smiled in satisfaction. I looked back towards the woods where Nadya was.

She wasn't there.

I shivered. Wither from the cold or fright I wasn't sure. I raced back to our tent. Rayyah and mummy finally had stopped. I opened the flap of the tent and nodded to mummy. She was mumbling under her breath. Rayyah was sitting on her bed looking triumphant.

"I'll be right back." Mummy snapped. We both nodded. She left and I immediately inquired of what happened.

"Mummy is letting me date Gunari!" Rayyah excitedly exclaimed. I threw my arms around her neck and giggled for joy. I was about to tell her about Nadya, but for some reason I decided it would be best to keep quiet. I laid down on my bed and fell asleep.

It was the middle of the night. I heard someone outside the tent yell my name. I sat up in my bed, wondering who would be calling this late. I slowly took my covers off and stood up in the tent. I tiptoed outside and looking around. No one. The person called my name again. I heard it from the woods. I found my way out of the cluster of tents.

The night was cold and dark. I heard an owl hoot in the distance. "Akila!"

There it was again. I turned around and nearly screamed. Nadya was standing right beside me.

"But....You're dead?" I asked, hardly being able to believe it. She smiled at me and nodded her head. "Then...How can I see you?" I whispered in fright.

"Because." She responded in her angelic voice. That was the only explanation she gave. "Why are you here?" I questioned.

She sat down on the ground and patted next to her. I very slowly and fearfully plopped down next to her. "I came to warn you."

"Against?"

"The one who holds your heart."

I blushed, she was talking about a gypsy who was a Torelli. His name was Stefan and just like his name, he was proud.

"What has he done?"

She shrugged, "Nothing yet."

"Then why are you warning me against him?" I snapped.

Nadya reached her hand out and smiled, "Because he wont be the one you marry."

After months of day dreaming about him and trying to get his attention, this is what I get? My heart broke. For years I had missed Nadya, but at that moment I turned angry, "I HATE YOU." I yelled. She smiled sadly and started fading away.

I regretted what I had said, "No! Nadya, I didn't mean it! I really didn't mean it! Come back!" By that time the woods was quiet. I started sobbing and trudged back to our tent. I fell onto my bed and cried my eyes out.

A/N: You wont understand this story probably. If you read You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone you'll understand it all. :)
