Guilt and Love

Draco Malfoy sat in his living room feeling like a guilty mess.  His daughter, his precious daughter, was in the infirmary after one of his own house's bacchanalian parties.  Why hadn't he warned her not to accept things from the older students?  Why hadn't he warned her not to go to those parties at all?

Mr. Malfoy came to the conclusion that she was not permanently damaged and that she had learned her lesson; therefore there was no reason to beat himself up over it.

It had caused quite a stir with the rest of the family, however.  Ginny, obviously, was furious.  She yelled for ages about how it was all Draco's fault, then decided it was the fault of the whole Slytherin house and yelled about that instead.

Ginny had obviously inherited her mother's temper and rage.  Draco smirked as he thought of Molly Weasley's face when Ginny had told her that she was dating Draco, that Christmas more than a decade ago.  Molly had almost gone as scarlet as her hair.  She acted polite to Draco, but he could hear her screaming at Ginny whenever he left the room.

Arthur never seemed to have a problem with his daughter dating a Malfoy.  What he did have a problem with was going to a wedding where the whole Malfoy clan was present.  Lucius and Arthur were far from friends, but they acted civil for their children's sake.

Lucius had yelled at Draco just as much as Molly had yelled at Ginny, but without the threat of Voldemort looming over them, the "she's a blood traitor" argument never got that far.  Lucius admitted that she was very beautiful, but as an ex-Death-eater, he still couldn't stand to have his son marry a Weasley.

Draco's thoughts drifted from his father to his wedding day.  Ginny had looked divine.  She had a simple one-shoulder dress and a pearl necklace.  It wasn't extravagant.  But she looked like a Greek goddess.  Beautiful, powerful, and radiant.  Draco was wearing his Slytherin tie with his tux, a last reminder to everyone that he was still the same Malfoy they all knew from Hogwarts.

All the guests were surprised to see Draco and Ginny so happy and in love.  The guests would never have bet that the two would even have ever been on first-name basis, yet here they were, doing the unimaginable, getting married.  There were no more bitter snaps of "Ferret" and "Weaselette".  Draco Lucius Malfoy and Ginevra Molly Weasley were going through with this.  They were going to have a life together.

It blew everyone's minds.  Draco loved being the center of their attention.  He loved the headline of the Daily Prophet, Malfoy Heir Marries Weasley Girl.  Did Rita Skeeter have nothing more interesting to write about?  Eh, no matter.

Draco loved defying his father after years of doing whatever pleased Lucius, Bellatrix, and Voldemort.  Draco was his own man, and he loved a Weasley.

Draco was pulled out of his memories by his wife.  Ginny had been lightly tapping his shoulder as he stared into the floor, thinking.  He looked up at her.

"I'm sorry Gin.  I should have told her.  I should have let her know what goes on at Slytherin house parties.  I could have sent her a letter.  I just...I don't want her to be like me anymore.  I want her to be safe."

"Drake," Ginny looked into his silver eyes.  "She's gonna be fine.  I'm sorry I yelled.  It's not your fault.  Or that of Slytherin house.  She should have better common sense than that.  I shouldn't have blamed you, Draco."

Draco's deep frown lightened into a grin as he saw the guilty look on his wife's face.

"Hmm," he laughed.  "I suppose I could forgive you.  Out of the depths of my evil Slytherin heart."

"Drake, you guilt-tripper," Ginny smiled.  She put a hand to his cheek and said, "Stop making me feel sorry for you, silly boy."

Draco sat up.  "What if that's what I want?"  He got up and chased her around the living room.  They ran all around the house together, feeling like little kids again, until they finally realized they were 29 and 30 years old.

They sat down on the couch and she curled up into his chest.  They sat there for a while until Ginny decided that Ginger Andromeda Malfoy should find out what a Howler was.
