Hermione Weasley had always been more perceptive than most people. She could always tell the things that were never obvious to anyone else, such as knowing about Harry's feelings for Cho and Ginny and then finally Luna, respectively, and her knowing when something was wrong with her friends. But today, she sensed something different was going to happen.
She was currently sitting on her white linen bedsheets, lost in thought, letting the pale white sunlight rest on her face and bare arms. She cocked her head to the right a bit impulsively when she heard Ron stir. She bent down and gave him a quick kiss before he was even fully woken up and then ran quickly downstairs, realizing that it was getting to be the later part of the morning and that she better make something to eat.
She began frying eggs and put a kettle of tea on. She was rushing around the kitchen all about until she felt two hands wrapping themselves her waist. She jumped and screamed shortly.
"Ronald!" she proclaimed, turning to look at her "attacker" and sounding as haughty as she always had had as a first-year as she scolded her husband. "You scared me half to death!"
"Cry, cry, cry," Ron muttered, walking over to the table with a smirk on his face and sat down to read the Daily Prophet. Hermione started giggling and he began to laugh as well.
When the food was done, Hermione got out some small china plates and began to dish them both up. She sat down at the table, sitting across from Ron, and set his food in front of him. He set his paper aside and began to eat viciously.
She narrowed her eyes. "Ron."
"Wha?" he asked, speaking with his mouth full of food.
"Slow down a bit. The eggs and bacon aren't going anywhere."
"Yeah they are. My stomach."
Hermione rolled her eyes and threw her hands up in the air. She was sitting there in mild annoyance until something outside the window caught her eye. She saw a black and white spotted owl flying toward the house and she became a bit excited. "Is that Cissa?" she asked cheerfully.
"Looks like it," Ron said, still with half-chewed food in his mouth.
Hermione ran to the window and opened it up, letting Ginger's graceful bird in to roost on their perch. She took the letter it held in its beak and took it back to her spot at the table.
The letter was written on simple white stationary with a delicate red rose printed at the top of the letter. Hermione began to read, her head spinning and each fact seeming as untrue as the last. She began to panic as she read the last few words, and Ron became genuinely concerned.
"What happened? Who is it?"
"It's Rose," Mione stuttered, her eyes wide and focused on the tiled floor.
"Is something wrong? Is she hurt?" Ron asked concernedly, his anger and worry beginning to show through his pale face.
"No. She.. She found my book."
"What book?" Ron asked, his fear and anger dying down at her simple words.
Hermione countered his question with a question. "Ron, do you remember third year? How Harry and I used the Time Turner to save Buckbeak and Sirius?"
"Yeah, I remember," Ron said resentfully, still unhappy that he hadn't done much during that particular part of their adventures that year.
"Well, that time turner has a twin. It's not an hourglass, but a small hand mirror on a chain that looks perfectly normal. Its powers are a bit like the Time Turner and Mirror of Erised combined. But instead of seeing your heart's desires, you travel back and forth through time. You can go into the glass and explore your future, but no one there can see you. You become ghost-like, almost like in- well I'm sure you haven't read any Charles Dickens- but it's kind of like you're the Ghost of Christmas Past, well in this case, Future as well."
Ron looked genuinely confused, but Hermione barreled on with her story. "I found the glass in our last year of Hogwarts, after the battle in that transition period where we repaired and cleaned out the old castle. I didn't mean to steal it or even borrow it, but it was tempting to look at and I couldn't help myself."
"Typical woman," Ron teased, earning a glare from Hermione.
"ANYWAYS, I took it back to my dorm room and I accidentally visited an alternate past and future. I saw strange things. Harry kissing Ginny on white marble steps. Neville admitting his feelings for Luna. And I saw our little boy."
"Boy?" Ron asked, his voice catching in his throat.
"Yeah. Hugo Weasley. Funny little boy with the cutest smile. Rose's younger brother. But he will never exist."
"Why not? I mean, you're.."
"Pregnant? Yeah. But our timing was different this time. Hugo was only supposed to be a couple years younger than Rose. But we waited eleven whole years. It will be a different child with different DNA. Hugo will never exist. That fact broke my heart."
"Okay," Ron said, trying not to show his disappointment and trying to change the subject, "so then what does this have to do with a book?"
"Right," Mione said. "After I learned of my original future, I transfigured the glass into a book and told the Hogwarts staff to keep it safe. It shifts form constantly and its effect on me was too great to keep it laying around here.
There are a few other books with it, but those are just my writings about our adventures. Those books aren't dangerous or magical, so I sent those to be put in the regular section of the library and sent the other book separately, so it could be placed in the restricted section. But according to this letter, Rose and Ginger have found the enchanted one, so it must not have been placed where I told them to put it it all! The worst part is that now the girls will be investigating. They'll search and scrounge and find and look their hardest for answers now."
"The answers to what?"
"The reason Hugo doesn't exist, why Harry married Luna, why Draco married Ginny. They will search until they find out what we did wrong, or right, depending on your point of view, that changed our futures. They will discover the truth behind our lost fate."
