Rhy's POV

I shook my head with disbelief. It can't be true, not close to true. I listened to the whispers as they blended with the wind.

"Poppy is your soul mate, why won't you listen?" I laughed at the question and shook my head.

"She is a human. Nothing like me. I was born a phantom like the others. It's the first time changing a human into a phantom. She can't be my soul mate and I refuse to accept it." I said stubbornly. The whispers rumbled with anger.

"Stubborn boy! Someday your stubbornness will get you into trouble. Just you wait." The voice had a point about my stubbornness, but it will help me, not destroy me.

I needed to talk to Master about this, to see if it was true. I would trust him more than voices in the wind. I turned to walk back to the glowing light of the portal.

"You can't walk away from fate. You may try, but you will not succeed." I ignored the truth and walked through the portal.

As the bright lights of the portal faded, I was back in my room. I let out a sigh and went into the bathroom. I pulled off my shirt and looked at the markings from my hand to my back. Night Phoenix. I mouthed the words. Being in charge granted me great powers and responsibilities. I ran my hand over the markings, still getting used to the new rank. I put my shirt back on and walked back into the big grey room.

I laid myself down on my king-sized bed and started rehearsing my lesson tomorrow. After a good hour of rehearsing I went to bed. Tomorrow I explain to Poppy about what we are and what we do.

I turned over on my side and instantly opened my eyes.  I let out a sigh, just wanting to sleep. Part of being in charge is you have to wake up early to get things ready. I heaved myself out of bed and looked at the time. It was three in the morning. I sighed and walked to my closet. I chose my black fancy jacket to cover my markings and a silver watch. I quickly got dressed and left my room. I walked around the corner and down the hall until I got to Poppy's room. I walked in knowing that she was still asleep.

I walked over to her and wrapped my fingers around her ankles. I yanked her to the floor and she screamed on the way down. I grinned and ran my hand through my hair.

"Time to get up." I said seriously. She glared at me and I just looked at her calmly.

"You could have told me, not pull me out of bed." She said hastily and she stood up.

"You can't possibly expect to be treated like princess. Because here, your nothing more than a slave." I said, thinking about what the voices said about her as my soul mate.

That reminded me, I needed to hurry so I could squeeze in the talk with Master. I nodded my head towards the door and started walking out.

"You think I'm going out there in pajamas?" She said, giving me a weird look.  I looked down at her fuzzy pajamas and her slippers. I nodded.

"You afraid?" I said, not waiting for her to follow me. She let out a sigh and dragged her feet as she followed me down the hall.

We went outside in the dark forest and we walked through the trees on a path. We walked through the trees until we got to a hill with a portal gate at the top. I stopped by the portal gate and looked at her.

"I need to explain what we are. And most importantly, what we do." When I said that, her tired face lit up.

"Finally." I rolled my eyes at the word. She has been here one day why is she saying finally? I thought, annoyed by her.

I looked around the depressing forest. It was so dark, I hardly see the light. I felt sadness knot in my heart. I pushed it away quickly realizing it was a weakness. I breathed in and looked over to Poppy. She had a sympathetic look on her face which made me mad.

"Stop that." I said, which made her glare at me.

"Anyways. Sanvi told you we were Phantoms?" She nodded so I carried on.

" I will start with the lowest rank. Slaves. They are the ones who do what we tell them to do."

"Then there is Night Feeders. They go out to the human world in the day and collect our food which is mostly plants." I said, glancing into the forest again.

"Then there is Night Watchers. You are a Night Watcher. They go out to the human world at night and watch over Night's creatures." I said looking over at her for her reaction. She seemed pleased.

"Next is Night Guard. They stay and guard our fortress or whatever you want to call it while we do our jobs."

"Then there is Night Phoenix." I glanced over at her. "I am the Phoenix. I get orders from Master himself and give them to you and I take control over you when he doesn't have orders." She seemed curious about Master and I raised my eyebrows. She quickly nodded to tell me she understood.

"Why don't you head back. I need to do something." I said and turned my gaze on the portal gate. I put my marked hand against the gemstone on the rock of the portal gate. It sent a cold chill through my body and my markings started slightly glowing blue. I closed my eyes and stepped forward into the portal that formed from my touch. I heard whispers as I traveled through until I got to the other side.

"Welcome, Rhy" Master's calm and deep voice calmed me as I walked closer to him.

He turned his head to show his white glowing eyes. I looked down to my hand and saw my markings were glowing white in his presence. I looked back up to him and held my head high.

"I have to talk about what the ancestors told me." He turned his head to the side.

"Tell me." He said, turning all the way to face me.

I felt something in my stomach, I didn't know if it was fear or what, but it was there. His head alone was bigger than my whole body. He was pure black and took the shape of a huge dragon. His claws were as long as my legs. I took in a breath.

"They said the human we turned is my..." I felt embarrassed of this because I hated the truth in it. The ancestors don't lie or make mistakes.

"Go on, my Phoenix." I looked up at him and swallowed. No turning back. Don't be a wimp. I thought.

"They said the human is my soul mate." He squinted his eyes.

"I don't see her being your soul mate. You're to.. serious for someone like her." I felt relieved to know he didn't believe them either.

I bowed to him and straightened up again. I let myself smile at Master and I turned and walked towards the portal.

"Rhy. Don't let this get in your way. I am still counting on you to do your job." I turned and nodded at him before going back through the portal.

Once I got out of the portal I let out a sigh. I hated being a Phantom. I longed to see light instead of darkness but that is never going to happen for me. Miracles don't happen for inhuman creatures. I walked down the path and went back to the fort. Once I walked in the big meeting room I saw Poppy at a table. Her brown wavy hair had highlights from the lights inside. I felt something in me and quickly pushed it away. No way I was going to fall in love with her. Not with a human.
