After Fallout

Chapter 3

I awoke in a strange bed I didn't open my eyes but I remembered Carlos and the overseer as well as leaving the vault then I remembered the gunshot and I felt a searing pain in my side I reached toward the pain but I heard a familiar voice it was Cassy I tried to open my eyes but they were groggy from sleep when I finally got them open the light hurt my eyes. Cassy set me into setting position while I blocked my eyes from the light it was brighter then anything I have ever seen before, she was saying something but everything was garbled. Sound soon returned as Cassy was telling me how she found a settlement to the west of the vaults entrance called gorges tale she carried me there with the help of a traveling merchant the clinic fixed me up good. I crawled out of bed and looked around it wasn't clean but I expected that with the bombs dropping and all, Cassy said that I was out for a few hours and the locals told her about the wasteland but the doctor interrupted by say that Cassy never left my side and the locals she was referring to was him, I couldn't help but smile. I thanked the doctor and asked if he had seen my father he shook his head and suggested I try the general goods store up the road I thanked him again and we were off. While Cassy and I were on our way up the street I noticed walls blocking a few streets off I asked why they did that she said the doctor told her it was to keep the wasteland out. I asked hat they meant to keep she just shrugged and onward we went, upon reaching the store we heard some gunshots Cassy huddled close to me and a man asked us if we've never heard a gun before while given us a funny face, Cassy said of course we had he walked off muttering something I noticed we weren't in our vault jumpsuits anymore. Cassy said that if we wore them out here people would take advantage of our lack in skills, "ooh I almost forgot" she said handing me a picture I asked what it was she said it was in my pocket when the doctor cut my suit off me. I looked at the picture it was of my 16 birthday it had me, my mom, my dad, Cassy, Noah and Sam it also had the overseer but he had been torn off, on the back it said, "don't forget where you came from -Sam" I felt tears in my eyes. I pushed my tears back and pushed forward, we entered the store and were looking for the man in charge when we found him we walked up to him and asked if he had seen my father after giving a rough description he nodded and said he was looking for something scientific something he couldn't find anywhere else I asked what it was he said something called a APA (agricultural production accelerator) at that moment I knew why my father left. My father was trying to accomplish my mother's dream to JumpStart the planet to live like it was before the bombs fell, I had to stop him before he got killed. I asked where the shopkeep sent my father he said he suggested he try the science lab in the next settlement over called life's hope he said all the scientists go there and he marked the local settlements on my pipboy, I thanked him and again we were off. I noticed Cassy was oddly quiet so I nudged her a little she snapped out of her daze and nudged back I smiled a little and  wrapped my arm around her shoulders and pretended to be exhausted and leaned on her letting a overly dramatic sigh out and told her to carry me she smiled and yelled out "trust fall" as she fell over on me we both fell to the ground good thing nobody else was around or that would be embarrassing I got up and dusted myself off as she did the same. We made it to life's hope in about an hour seeing little action other than a few wild dogs and mole rats (which I beat to death with a large stick), when we got there we were greeted by a vault tech protectron indicating directions around the small town I told Cassy to keep close just in case something happened she nodded and we entered the front gate.
