The next week, Anastasia was slicing a loaf of bread with her knife. She reached over to the wash basin to wash off the crumbs and saw that Ehrhart's words were still written there.
Ehrhart. Anastasia's life at the palace felt so far away now. So distant. And her promise to Ehrhart felt practically nonexistent. And Casper felt new and close and special. And wrong.
Snap out of it, Stasia. Casper is Snow's prince, not yours. And then: But Snow's gone, isn't she? And she's never coming back. She has a life with the dwarves now.
This internal battle raged in Anastasia for the next week as she and Casper continued to sing their duet daily in the streets of Lohr am Main, drawing audiences from Lohr am Main and beyond. They grew close; not as a thing but as friends, and one day Casper gave Anastasia a bouquet of red roses that were the color of Snow's lips.
"I miss her as much as you do," he told her as he handed them over. "They remind you of her, don't they?"
Anastasia nodded wordlessly, not really sure what to think of her old friend anymore.
They began to go on walks together, meeting at night sometimes to study the stars and find patterns in the clouds during the day.
It seemed like the perfect ending.
