The days that followed the gallery opening included Niall constantly trying to contact Maddie and Maddie rejecting him every time. In the end it resulted in Maddie switching off her phone and hiding it under the pillow away from temptation. She didn’t want to ‘break up’ with Niall but he needed to be punished for treating her so rudely in front of a huge offer that may not come around again. However, she was beginning to miss him dearly. His jokes and puns, his fluffy blonde hair, his sweet romantic kisses at the most random times. She also missed his thick Irish accent, which made it 10 times harder to ignore his calls. One click of a button and she could hear it again but then he would have won and that’s not the point in punishment is it? If we didn’t get punished we wouldn’t learn and do it again and again. Even when we are little children and we hated getting punished, we knew never to do what we did again.
So instead of hearing her ringtone over again, her phone went off and she lay on her front flicking through a magazine while her siblings sat quietly watching meaningless show on Nickelodeon. The magazine was not much meaningful to the show itself either just full of celebrities, sex, drama and adverts. But it was taking her mind off of Niall which she was desperate to do.
“Maddie” Poppy got up from her previous position on the floor and jumped on the sofa with her “Where’s Niall?”
“He’s in his house, Princess” She sighed and played with her hair.
“Why?” She looked confused at her older sister.
“It doesn’t matter, Pops. Let’s go colour yeh?” She would always distract them with activities like art, sports or reading. It usually worked too when her mother would return home drunk and Maddie didn’t want them to see her. She hadn’t been home at all recently, not even to get more money or fresh clothes. Madison’s calls were rejected by her just like she was doing to Niall.
That evening she did come back though, drunk as ever. Her shouting echoed through the whole flat and before her violent streak could kick in Maddie packed a small bag from them all and got her siblings out before they took a beating. It was never this bad before but then she didn’t stay out for days doing god knows what.
They wondered for a while until the sky turned darker and the kids grew tired. “Mad, just do it already. His father is away on business and I’m sure there is room for us” Isabel urged “Before we have to sleep outside.” This earned a huge sigh off her sister and dialled the number.

“Come in” Niall said, opening the door wider for them to enter. His hand grabbed Maddie’s and pulled her aside away from the others. “Why have you been ignoring me?”
“Are you seriously asking that question?” Her voice tried to stay calm but screamed furious.
“Please Maddie I’m sorry” He looked at her with his big blue eyes that made her melt. He took her silence and forgiving facial expression as a sign that she was no longer mad. Whether it was out of choice or that she just couldn’t stay mad at him was another matter. “I’m sorry about your mum too” He sighed, removing a piece of hair that hung over her face to behind her ear.
“She’s gonna hurt us” She mumbled, looking at the floor. His muscular arms wrapped around her securely and she buried her head into his shoulder.
“I won’t let her.”

They’d stayed in the Horan household the next day, Niall teaching Poppy how to swim while the others played in the pool. It gave Maddie time to catch up on the jobs she hasn’t done when avoiding Niall. She was now avoiding going home. The fear of them getting hurt was too much to bear especially if someone then saw and took Poppy, Lewis and Isabel would be taken away. That would break her promise to her father that she’d look after everyone. She often thought of him and what life would be like now if he was here. She would have finished high school and have gone to college. They wouldn’t live in a flat but a house and her mother wouldn’t be a crazy drunk. Also how he would have liked Niall like her siblings do. She thought her mother would like him too if she’d sober up enough to actually get to know a new person.
That night Niall drove them back ‘home’. He noticed how much they didn’t want to go and agreed to stay the night just in case. It was also so they call sleep with a sense of security. He has been in many fights over the years and could definitely handle himself in many situations such as dealing with drunks. It was late when they got there so went straight to bed. It was all clear until the next morning…
