The Help- Niall Horan Story

Chapter 5

Glancing at the clock it read 1am. She pressed the button on her phone to ring home before standing in a quiet corner of the garden. The party wasn’t even close to finishing.

“Hello?” Lewis answered.

“Lew! What are you doing up? Where’s Isabel?”

“Her and Poppy fell asleep. Maddie will you come home please?” He pleaded.

“Lew I’ll be as quick as I can okay? Make sure the door is locked and go to sleep I’ll see you in a bit yeh?” She explained.

“Okay” Lewis agreed before hanging up. Determined to leave now, Maddie threw on her jacket over the maid costume Niall bought.

 “Hey gorgeous” A voice from behind Maddie whispered in her ear as his big hands held tightly on her small waist as she was about to exit. At first she thought it was Niall until she saw him the other side of the pool talking to a few mates.

“Uh hi” She replied, trying to escape from his grasp.

“Where you going, baby?” He laughed, the smell of alcohol in his breath hitting Maddie.  

“Home” She replied bluntly.

“But we’re just getting to know each other” He spat. “Lets go for a little dip” With that his muscular arms picked her up bridal style and threw her into the cool water. As soon as Maddie got back to the surface her face went red with embarrassment as everyone at the party laughed.

Pushing his way through the crowd, Niall got to see what everyone was laughing at.

“Whats everyone laughing at?” He asked the closes person next to him.

“I don’t know some idiot fell in the pool” He laughed and so did Niall until he saw Maddie pull herself out of the water. Her phone completely ruined, mascara down her face and shoes filled with water. His smile soon fell as he saw the expression on her face. Running out of the house, the laughs still continued but seemed to be getting louder. Niall was quick on his feet to chase after her. By then she was out of drive way and down the street back to the rundown flat she called home.

“Maddison, please, wait!” He yelled.

“I quit Niall! Tell your father to hire someone else because Im not ever coming back!” She told him looking him straight in eyes.

“Maddie-“ He began before she started walking back home. Yet he wouldn’t get the hint and continued to follow her. “Go away” She kept saying, not turning to face him though.

“No way. Im making sure you get home safe at least.” It took him by surprise when she started walking up the steps of the ugly flat building.

“Im home. Please go away” Her eyes were puffy and red as she saw Niall’s expression at the building. As she opened the front door, Lewis came running to see who had walked through the door.

“Maddie why are you so late?” He panicked, hugging his big sister.

“Doesn’t matter Lew, just go to bed and I’ll see you in the morning” She kissed his forehead before he ran off.

“Who was that?” Niall asked.

“My brother”

“Where’s your parents?” He questioned.

“My dad died and my mother is an alcoholic. We live in this hell hole while my mother drinks her sorrows away and I look after my three siblings.” She confessed, tears finally rolling down her face.

“W-why didn’t you say anything?” His whispers were filled with sadness.

“I don’t need your pity” With that she shut the front door and fell to the floor crying.

The next morning, after Isabel, Poppy and Lewis went off to school; Maddie found herself waiting on her hung over mother again. Not for long though as she went back to the local pub. Instead of facing a hang over she continues to drink not to feel the pain.

“Day time TV sucks” Maddie sighed to herself.

 As soon as 3.20pm hit, Maddie was excited to have company around. They knew something was up. She was quiet, not like her bubbly self.

“Im going to take a nap” She mumbled before falling asleep in her bed. An hour later she was rudely awaken by laughter and music coming from the main room. Rubbing her sleepy eyes she slowly made her way into the room wearing her jogging bottoms and a baggy top. Her eyes grew wide as she saw Poppy, Lewis and Niall playing with musical instruments on the sofa.

“Whats he doing here?” She questioned. “Why did you let a stranger in?”

“Niall’s not strange” Poppy laughed falling to the Irish boys side. Niall couldn’t help to smile. With the stern look Maddie gave her siblings, they soon went off into their room however their ears were pressed against the door to hear the following conversation. At first there was a moment of silence before Niall finally broke the ice.

“I got you something” He smiled.

“I told you I don’t need your pity” She protested.

“Please open it” He pleaded handing her a little velvet box. Opening it carefully, Maddie was surprised to see a Gold four leaf clover necklace. “Do you like it? I generally feel terrible at everything I did. I had no idea you had others to look after, I wouldn’t have made you work late or wear that outfit.” He rambled.

“I love it” Niall sighed with relief as he helped her put it around her neck. “Please may I have my job back?” She added.

“Of course as long as you come to dinner with me tomorrow night. I’ll even get you a baby sitter.” Was his offer. After thinking about it for a minute and looking at his puppy dog face Maddie finally caved in.

“Im not a one night stand girl Niall”

“I promise it’ll be perfect”
