Chapter 23

HANNAH

"So, how's Stine? Has he been busy lately? Does he continue writing?"Jane asked a lot of questions as she served me a fresh batch of chocolate chips and milk.

Jane tripped a bit and almost dropped the snacks. "Are you okay?"I asked, grabbing her wrist. She regained her balance and placed the snacks on the table. She sat down on the couch across and stretched.

"I am getting old, you know."

Wait. Dead people don't get old.

They're dead, duh!

"So, about Stine...is he a good father?"Jane asked, doing a bit more of stretching.

"He's good. He stopped writing though."I answered. "And your husband? I've heard about what he's done, but I don't know him that much."Jane looked me in the eye. She coughed.

"Oh Zach? Well he continued dad's career in writing but he's also into business. We're both 22 and we just got home a few days ago from our honeymoon."I smiled.

"Ooh! Newlyweds huh? Well I bet that the honeymoon was somewhere very breathtaking."

"Actually, yeah. The whole of Europe."I nodded. I bit from the cookie and noticed something strange with the milk. It got a kind of greenish color, which is so unusual. Jane coughed more and gasped for breath. It was like she couldn't breathe.

"Are you sure you're okay?"I asked. "Of course, dearie!"She smiled.

I ignored the milk by chewing on more cookies. I mean, they're safe to chew, right? Jane's glance quickly darted from the milk to me as she nervously smiled and let out a nervous chuckle.

"Drink, dear. Zach surely wouldn't want you to choke."Jane gently commanded. She smiled wider and her eyes widened. It's kind of creepy, actually.

I took the glass of milk and placed the tip close to my lips, but not close enough since I still have a few words to say. She had the glint in her eyes that told me she wasn't Jane. Then I realized her eyes...it wasn't very human-ish. It was like the one in the masks kids buy during halloween...

"I'm sure Zach also wouldn't want me drinking poisonous stuff, especially one given by the Haunted Mask."

Then something else happened.

Jane--I mean, THM in Jane's body, shook and I could see The Haunted Mask being extracted from...Jane?!
