Laxus' POV

"Dad?"

I looked at the man in front of me, then back to my husband. I blinked, and as I remembered the old man's face and his eyes that glistened with insanity, and shuttered with the memory of that day.

I lunged forward, yelling "What do you want?" I was prepared to protect Freed from this maniac.

The man only smirked and I saw a shimmer of metal before hearing a gunshot and feeling my head hit the floor.

"Laxus!" I heard his voice yell, and felt my green-haired soulmate at my side.

I heard a deep chuckle before Mira's scream filled my ears. Freed left my side, standing quickly and gasping. I tried sitting, and winced, holding a hand over the wound in my upper left chest, and I felt warm blood cover my palm. I saw Freed's father had taken Mira, she had a gun against her head.

"Don't hurt her!" Freed and I both yelled, my voice hoarse and quiet, Freed's shaky and terrified.

He looked between us, then, still holding Mira, pointed the gun at Freed, who took a step back.

"I heard you joined Fairy Tail," he smirked.

"Dad..." he muttered putting his hands to his mouth. "What are you doing here?"

"You were always a coward," he cackled. "You all always were!"

His mind was far beyond persuasion, and I racked my brain to think of any way out of this situation.

"What do you have against us." I heard my mate mutter, voice cracking in fear. His husband, best friend and unborn child were all in immediate danger and it was beginning to dawn on him.

I winced and got to my knees, trying to stand up, and thinking of ways to reason with the guy.

"Don't move." He yelled, moving the gun from Freed to me, then back to Mira, who gasped a bit at the action and the cold metal against her temple.

Tears were now screaming down Freed's face, and he reached slowly for his rapier, his hand clutching into a fist around the handle, his knuckles turning white.

"Freed, what are you doing, I can handle this." I said, jumping onto my feet and grabbing the man's hand, and causing the trigger to be pulled and Mira falling, narrowly avoided the bullet.

"Mira!" Freed gasped as she collapsed to the floor and I began wrestling with the lunatic.

A small shot of lightning dazed the man but his hold on the gun remainded tight. I could feel blood flowing down my torso and I began to feel woosy, but I tried to gather up my remaining strength to deliver one final blow.

"Lightning dragon... ROAR!" I shouted, then heard a scream and a loud noise as I fell on my back and my vision became fuzzy. Soon all light and consciousness left my mind.

Freed's POV

I sat up from my seat, rubbing my eyes and resting my head in my hands. Mira cracked open the door to see if I was awake. I lifted my head and saw the mage shuffle quietly into the room. Wiping the tears from my bloodshot eyes I stood up to greet her.

"Hey Freed are you okay?" she asked, pulling me into a hug. "I brought some soup." She held out a grocery bag and I took it, going back to the small couch on the other side of the room. Moving the blankets to the side, I sat down and Mira joined me, pulling out a cup of soup and handing it to me. She pulled out her own, as well as a package of Red Vines, dipping them into the soup. I giggled a little at that and she just sneered at me.

"Shut up," she jokingly whispered under her breath.

I glanced at her stomach, she was really starting to show. It had been 12 weeks, after all.

I returned my gaze to Laxus, where it had been frequently over the past few months. Mira, seeing me longingly stare at the blonde, said, "Are you really okay, Freed?" she placed a hand on my shoulder, and I sighed.

Setting down my soup -- I didn't have much of an appetite anyway -- I went over to kneel next to the hospital bed. I looked at Laxus' closed yet peaceful eyes, willing them to open, trying to remember their color, and what they looked like on the rare occasion when he smiled. I placed a hand on his shoulder, and laid my head on his arm, trying not to let the tears come as they did almost every day recently.

"You know it's almost Christmas," I heard the white-haired mage beside me.

"Really? Has it been that long?" I asked, my voice barely audible seeing as my mouth was against the cold bedsheets.

She knelt beside me and I felt a warm hand ruffle my hair. "You know, I liked your hair better when it was long," she sighed. "It's more... you." I laughed at that. As if my hair was the most of my worries.

"Do you think..." I sighed quietly. "Do you think he'll wake up before Christmas. I would hate for him to miss the baby's first holidays."

She didn't reply, and instead took her hand off my head. I turned my head to look at her, she had placed her hand on her belly, looking down at it then back up to the dragonslayer.

I blinked open my eyes, the bright sun glaring into them. I groaned. "What the heck, Mira--"

"Ohmigod Freed," she whispered. I stood up, running over to where she was standing next to the bed.

Laxus moved a finger, then his eyes, then his lips. He couldn't really open his eyes, or speak, but he tried.

"Whhhh.." he tried to say. I sat next to him, and grabbed his hand.

"What Laxus?" I said, tears waterfalling down my face.

"What..." he tried again. "Is wrong with your hair."
