We're sitting on the floor in the boy's room about an hour before bedtime, comparing timetables. So far, we're in most of our classes together, I guess being the only four kids in our year to be in Glycon has it's advantages.
"HIstory?" Medan reads out.
"Professor Kendra"
"Kendra"
"Kendra" We all read out.
"Same!" He exclaims.
"PT?" Steph reads out.
"What's that?" Most of the other subjects are straightforward, but what does PT stand for?
"I think it's Power Training." Tyler suggests.
"Well, we aren't in the same class for that." I read the Teachers and rooms on their papers.
"That's because it's according to species." That makes sense.
"What species does Kendra have?" Medan reads my slip.
"Uh...I don't know." Steph looks at me for an answer. I just stare at my feet.
"Sooooo...are you guys gonna join the battle teams?" Thank god...change the subject please!
"Battle teams?" Tyler seems interested.
"Yeah! They get a bunch of kids together and select five to have a 'friendly' competition against one of the other houses every fortnight." The daemon seems really excited about this.
"I don't know...it sounds kinda violent." Stephanie cautiously says, her wings quivering slightly.
"No one ever gets hurt past a few bruises and scrapes." He reassures.
"I don't see why not then." Tyler replies.
"I think I'll skip on that one." I back out. I can't fight without powers!
"Oh come on! It's fun!" Medan tries to encourage me.
"Nah."
"Actually...we didn't see your powers before." He recalls.
"uhhh..." Oh not again!
"Yeah!" The other two join in.
"Uhhh...I don't have any powers." I whisper. They cast glances across the circle before asking,
"WHAT?!"
"I don't have powers!" I repeat.
"Of course you do. Why else would you be here?" Stephanie says, confused.
"I don't know." I give up. It was pure luck I escaped the last time, and it is just going to continue if I don't say something now. "I'm not from here. I'm human. Professor Kendra brought me here because apparently I have the 'Magic Gene' but I'm definitely not like you guys." Stares. Just Stares.
"Does anyone else know?" Tyler asks.
"Annais. That's it." I answer. Nothing. No comments, no words, nothing. I just sit there, tracing over the wood grains in the floor.
"We won't tell anyone." The angel wraps her arms around me for a second, her wings making it hard for her to move quickly while sitting down. I mutter a thanks and move back to my room. Steph and I agreed that I would take the bed on the right while she took the one on the left, so I change into a nightdress and crawl under the covers, and lie there. I fiddle with my pendant under the fabric. I've only been here a day and I've already gotten myself into a situation.
After a while, I hear the others say their good nights and Stephanie closing the adjoining door before changing and slipping into bed, not without some awkwardness with her wings. Not long after her breathing became steady, I fell asleep, but not for long.
My eyes open to my bedroom, not with Steph and Glycon and Ouranio, but my human, normal bedroom, with streaks of sunlight peeking through the curtains. I feel completely rested, not like I've spent the last night in some other dimension.
"Oh...so that's how it works."
