Chapter Four

I got no sleep last night, I tossed and turned all night just thinking about how after today I was going to lose Jude. It didn’t even matter that I was going to have to explain to Heidi what happened to Jude. No I was sad because I was losing him, the cat I didn’t want to watch to begin with, somehow he crawled into my heart and he will forever have a place in my heart.

Now I just sat here looking at Jude, he wasn’t happy either. I didn’t know if it was because we showed him the picture of Toby or if he sensed I was going to give him away. Either way he wasn’t happy, he had his head resting on my knee and just stared at the wall. He had spent most of the night crying again, but at least I knew why now.

After today, he was going to go home to his real owner, or his owner’s father since Toby disappeared and nobody knows where he is. I still didn’t even know what to tell Heidi, that’s if she ever returns my calls.

That too has me thinking, what she was doing that she couldn’t return my calls. I was even starting to think about the little remarks Karina kept saying, what if she was cheating on me and I was just too stupid to notice. I would really feel like the biggest loser, because I fell for that whole bullshit about waiting a few months before she sleeps with a guy.

I looked over to the clock, I needed to get out of bed and get ready for work. I looked at Jude, he still hadn’t moved from where he was. I didn’t blame him; I didn’t want to get out of bed either. If it wasn’t for the fact I had to me with Mr. Bennett, I would call in sick.

I stroked Jude’s back, “Well I guess I have to get out of bed now.” he meowed, but still didn’t move his head. “Are you going to join me for breakfast or are you going to be moping around all day in bed?” he meowed as he got up and stretched out his body. I sighed; this was going to be our last morning together before I had to give him back to his rightful owner.

I went to go get ready for work while Jude waited on the bed for me. I made our usual breakfast and we ate it in silence. I looked over at Jude, I just hoped they feed him good food and not that crap Heidi always gave him. I finished my breakfast and while I waited for Jude to finish I diced up the chicken I had been leaving him for lunch. I took his plate and placed it in the dishwasher, I placed the chicken in his bowl and made sure he had enough water.

I stroked his back before he jumped off the stool, “Well Jude I will see you later and then I will take you back to your real owner.” He meowed as he hugged my leg; I swallowed back the lump that was forming in my throat. He was making hard to leave right now, I bent down and picked him up. He rubbed his face against mine, “I never had a pet before and I probably never will after this. Just know whatever happens today, I have never seen you as a pet.” I kissed his head, “I will always see you as a person. A person I wish was real.” His paw touched my face and I smiled, it was almost as if he felt the same way. Too bad he was just a cat, because if he was a real person, he would be the one for me.

“You look like shit,” Karina said as we went to work. “Did you get any sleep last night?” I shook my head as we exited the elevator. “God man, I really didn’t think you would take it that hard. You must really love Jude and I’m sorry you have to give him back to his owner. You know you would have to have given him back to Heidi when she came back.”
