Chapter Twenty (Toby’s POV)

I stood there stunned, I had asked him why it was so important for us to keep our relationship a secret. Now I knew why, he had plans to make Declan his new VP and don’t want anyone to think he got the job because of me.

I felt somewhat hurt, I didn’t know he would put his business before my own happiness. I was starting to believe he didn’t think we belonged together. That secretly he is hoping that we don’t stay together.

“Dad, dad, dad,” I called after him as I spotted him talking to some of the board members. He stopped talking and looked up from the papers in his hands.

“Toby I wasn’t expecting you until later,” he said as he signed the papers and give it to one of the board members. “Meet me up in the conference room in thirty and we will finish looking over the contracts.”

“Dad we need to talk,” he looked at his watch.

“Toby I’m on a tight schedule, can’t we talk about this later at home?”

“No!” I yelled, people turned in our direction. My eyes landed on Declan, he looked at me with concern. “I’m sorry dad but this can’t wait, please I need to talk to you.” He looked around, almost everyone went back to talking or congratulating Declan.

“Fine go up to my office and I’ll be up there in a minute.” I nodded my head and went up to his office. I sat in the chair in front of his desk, I don’t know why I was nervous. I didn’t even know where to begin.

The door opened and my dad walked inside, he shut the door before walking to his desk, “Ok what is it you wanted to talk about?” he sat down and leaned back in his chair.

“I wanted to talk about the possibility of Declan and I going public with our relationship.”  He leaned forward and looked at me.

“No and if that’s all I have a meeting I need to get too.” He got up from his chair and walked back to the door.

“Why not?” I asked as I turned around to face him.

“Toby he just got promoted to VP of this company, you two come out as a couple, everyone is going to think it’s because he is dating you he got the position.”

“But dad, Declan doesn’t care what people think and I don’t either.”

“I care and I will not have the tabloids making things worse for this company!” he raised his voice at me, he had never done that before.

“But dad why should it matter, what if we just act like we barely started dating. People wouldn’t think that then.”

“No Toby, just keep your relationship with Declan a secret. It’s for your own good and you will thank me in the long run.”

“Why, I thought you like Declan?”

“I do, he is a hardworking man and he has determination. Which is why I picked him as my VP, I know he is young but I know I can trust him with my company and he will treat it as if it was his own company.”

“Then why make me keep our relationship a secret?”

“I don’t want you to get hurt.”

“What do you mean get hurt?”

“When it comes to relationships with Declan, they don’t last. Do you know how many relationship he has had in the last fifteen years?” I shook my head, it wasn’t something we ever talked about. “Sixty, that’s four a year which means none lasted no more than three or four months.”

“We have been together for six and how do you even know all this?”

“You think I didn’t have someone check him out?” I shook my head again. “I had too, I have heard about him. Heard how he likes to jump from one relationship to another, which just makes me question if he is a good enough boyfriend for you.”

“He is good enough, if he wasn’t than he wouldn’t have been able to break the curse.”

“I know Toby, but he is older than you and he has been in a lot more relationships than you.”

“It’s just six years, that’s not a huge age gap. You’re just making excuse, what the real reason for making me keep our relationship a secret? Is it because you don’t want people to know I’m gay or something?”

“Toby you know that doesn’t matter to me.”

“Then what is it?”

My dad slammed his fist on the door, “Because I need Declan and when the times comes for me to name a new CEO, it’s going to be him. I don’t need that to get ruin when your relationship fails, because it will. He is in a position of power now and he is going to be getting a lot of attention from both women and men. For someone like Declan, he isn’t going to want to be tied down when he can have whoever he wants.”

“But it won’t, dad his my true love and we are supposed to be together forever.” I said softly as I tried to fight back the tears.

“I am sorry, but that is how I feel and I know you don’t want to hear that but it’s the truth. It’s just better you end it with him, in the end it will be better for you two. You can find yourself another guy that won’t have a dating record like Declan. There are plenty of other guys out there for you.”

“None of them will be Declan,” my dad reached out to touch my shoulder but I pushed his hand away from me. “I have class,” I opened the door and ran out of his office, I just wanted to get away from him. He really was going to put his company before my happiness and it hurt like hell.

 If I hadn’t told him I didn’t want to take over the company, I’m sure he wouldn’t have said that to me. He was just getting back at me for that. I ditched my classes for the day and just went home. He put me in a hard spot right now and was asking me to do the impossible. I loved Declan too much to just end it.

I laid in bed, I ignored all my calls and messages. I didn’t want to talk to anyone right now, I just wanted to be left alone with my thoughts. I heard knocking on my door, “I just want to be left alone.” I said as I heard the door open, it was Tabby.

“Toby what’s wrong?” she walked over to my bed and crawled next to me, she wrapped her arms around me and I started to cry, “Toby what’s wrong?” I cried as I told her everything, I just wanted this to be a terrible nightmare. I didn’t want to believe my dad would say that to me, I didn’t want to believe he didn’t want me to be happy.

“It’s not fair Tabby, Why is dad doing this? He knows how I feel about Declan, he’s wrong about Declan, I know he feels the same for me.” She stroked my hair as she held me.

“I know he does, Toby I know he does.”

“I wish mom was here, I she would never let dad do this. She would know how much Declan means to me.” I cried and cried, it was unfair he was doing this, he didn’t know Declan the way I did. I know we belonged together and it wasn’t right he was asking me to do this. Declan is the only reason I was able to be here, I know deep down in my heart what I had with him was real.
